Could this be asthma?

I will book a Dr's appt in the morning but thought I would ask opinions here in the meantime!

So, I am nearly 40 years old, currently very overweight (have just started to sort this out and am day 5 into healthier eating plan-going very well so far), have never smoked, like a glass or 3 of wine, have eczema as a child but now only get when severely stressed (no sign of it for a few years). Generally well.

Had swine flu 3 years ago and since then seem to pick up every damn cold going.

Anyway, to the point. I have for the last few months been waking in the night on a fairly regular basis and having the most awful coughing fits, I often feel lightheaded at the time, my DH says that my breathing sounds weird after these episodes too.

He thinks I sound/seem asthmatic, can it really start at my age with no previous history? i know you guys can't possibly diagnose me but I'm curious if anyone thinks DH could be right?

Thanks.

I didn't become asthmatic until my early 30's so it's entirely possible. I also cough if I'm having a bit of a spell. I would ask if I were you.

It could be, best to get checked out.

Anyone can develop late on-set asthma so he maybe right.

Yes he may well be right; there are a few things you can do to help yrself BTW; the Buteyko method of nose breathing helps my DH a lot (he has diagnosed late onset asthma which is under control since 'nose breathing') and also cutting out as much dairy (esp. milk) from yr diet you can. You not need any meds. if you do this

Thanks for the replies, I have a Dr's appt booked for a couple of weeks time (soonest I could get without an emergency appt!).

I have also started a healthy weight loss regime as I'm sure the extra weight I'm carrying won't be helping matters!

No it probably won't but our ex DIL is asthmatic and not overweight! The Buteyko is so simple it's almost laughable it's only keeping yr mouth closed!! Google the Earth Clinic for more natural ways of tackling yr problems.
