dear - why are you so concerned? Smear tests should not be painful although it can be uncomfortable unless you relax. Have you never had one before? The fact that you have 2 cervixes will not make a difference to the test except that cells will need to be taken from each cervix, so it will last a few seconds longer. The people you see will help you relax and explain to you everything they are doing. What is it specifically that is worrying you?

Can someone go with you? Or maybe you could ask your GP or practice nurse to speak with the hospital and explain your anxiety - they have probably seen people with anxiety before and can hopefully get you in and out as quickly as possible. The waiting around is usually when anxiety levels rise so if you can keep yourself occupied, don't get there too early, take some strong mints and possible bachs remedy or Kalms before you go. Let us know how you get on!

It should help if you ask them to do an internal examination to check the location of your cervixs before they try and do the smear. My first smear was awful - as it took the nurse 40 minutes to find my cervix - but for my next smear I explained what had happened to my GP, so she did an internal to check where my cervix was before starting off with the smear, and so she could do the smear really quickly, and it only took a few minutes.

A few things that might help a little with the anxiety are:
1)bach rescue remedy (you can get this from boots and holland and barratt), you put a few drops on your tongue
2)cupping your hands in front of your mouth, and breathing into your hands when you feel anxious; that helps to stop you hyperventilating, as when you hyperventilate you feel even more anxious
3)avoiding caffeine (coffee, tea, coke) as that can make you more anxious.

For general advice on panic/panic attacks, there is a good website - www.nopanic.org.uk
