What is this? Panicking about Chest Pain :(

I've been experiencing pain in my right lung on and off for about 18 months, more off than on (seem to go through long phases OK and then it comes back for a couple of weeks). Sometimes I feel it in the back, sometimes the side, sometimes the bottom, and sometimes I have the strangest feeling that could almost be described as an itch right in the middle. I don't have a cough, don't seem to be having any problems breathing - basically it's just the pain.

I did have a chest x-ray a few months ago as part of investigations in to something else completely unrelated, they never told me the results of it - which I assumed at the time meant there was nothing abnormal.

I'm an ex-smoker (gave up about 5 years ago) so the first thing I think to myself is cancer. I know, I should go to the doctor, think I am avoiding it as I'm terrified.

We can't tell you what it is, but we can support you as you get it investigated.

No, I know you can't - if only the power of mumsnet stretched to accurate diagnoses :) The title was more of a rhetorical question.

Thanks for the offer of support.

I'm also quite adept at avoid doctors out of fear. But sometimes the known is less frightening than the unknown... or if it isn't, sometimes the known is treatable, which the unknown never is. In other words: go to the doctor. As OYBBK says, MN is here to support you...

So, first step is book that appt :) We have a support thread going that you are very welcome to join, esp if the gp wants to refer you on.

Hi all, thanks for your messages, it's feeling a little better today and I've booked an appointment with the doc for 10.50.

Nice one... I do appreciate how hard that may have been. Do report back...

hey - just back from docs, she's sending me for a chest x-ray, in her words "I don't have any alarm bells ringing, but want to be certain" - DD is off nursery with a temperature today so will have to go tomorrow.

Cuppatea, I am so glad I have found this thread as I think I have the same symptoms as you and I have been wondering if I'm going mad, plus scaring myself with awful self-diagnoses Sad

It's on my left side but otherwise completely identical pain to what you describe. I am also an ex-smoker, haven't smoked for about 4-5 years, since I was pregnant with DD1, bar literally a handful of very drunken nights out when I've fallen off the wagon. I have been to the doctors about 5 times about it over the last 2 years, each time they listen to my chest and tell me it's nothing... I have just been this morning for an xray which was at my instigation as I just want to be sure it's nothing serious. The doctor actually said 'well I'll send you for an xray but nothing's going to come back' Hmm
I have to wait a week for the xray results, does that sound normal? I have managed to convince myself that the reason they didn't give me the results immediately is because the news is bad Sad

what stage are you at? have you had your xray yet?
