Am 47 next.

I had the mirena coil taken out about 3 years ago (after having it in 5 years) I am pretty certain it made me more moodier than I am now. I had it put in for both contraception and really heavy period purposes.

Since having it taken out, my periods are just getting heavier and heavier although I have missed a month here and there... In Feb DH took me away to London. My period started and I went through three super plus tampons in an hour. Using the Mooncup is just a joke too...

I have an appt tomorrow to see the mirena coil dr (she seems to work part-time and is the only one that can fit/take out and appts seem far and few between). My period is supposed to be here but isn't. I remember last time she had real trouble inserting it - I have had two sections, she said this made a difference to how it went in. My womb is tilted too.

Is there anything else out there that reduces periods?

Sorry if above is tmi, but I am just not sure what to do...

Im the same age, had same issue, Mirena did not work.

I had a novasure ablation done. brilliant - no hormones, no periods. however, not sure its 100% for contraception.

BellaVita · 15/04/2012 18:55

Hatti, what is a novasure ablation?

The contraception thing does not worry me.

They insert a baloony thing (under general) and basically cauterise your womb. I had exactly your problem - heavy heavy bleeds. ALso have tilted womb.

At our age, I think we're pretty sure about whether we want more kids - I certainly didnt, so this is a permanent solution.

I am 100% happy with mine....highly recommend because there is no hormonal change. I have a slight discharge once a month - a pantyliner job, but thats it. The procedure is quick, under general and done as outpatient.

AFter procedure, you can experience cramping for a couple of days, plus about a month of watery discharge as womb heals. No sex for a couple of weeks I think. But thereafter you are back to normal. find out more here

BellaVita · 15/04/2012 19:46

Thanks for that Hatti.

We definitely do not want any more children. Ours our now 15 and nearly 13. Holidays abroad are an absolute dream with them and DH and I are just starting to go out early doors without the need to get someone in to referee them Grin.

What do you use for contraception if you don't mind me asking?

How long did you have to wait to have it done?

bella, my other half has been snipped. It was that or condoms, so he managed to pluck up the courage!! (well, plus he was allowed to treat himself to a wide screen plasma TV for his pain and suffering. Hmm )

I waited about 2 months for mine after seeing the gynae - she was very sympathetic - i think because Id tried and failed with Mirena.

BellaVita · 15/04/2012 20:31

Hmm DH will not have the snip. He has been in and out of hospital since he was 21 and has had three major ops.

I suppose I will just have to wait and see what the dr comes up with tomorrow, I will certainly discuss the ablation with her though.

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

Navasure is a contraceptive, because it destroys the lining of the womb. But its not 100% so I think maybe you could ask to have your tubes tied at the same time? Theres a product in the US called Adiana which is a permanent contraceptive inplant which is done at the same time as novasure....dont know if its available in the UK, but info here

I know how you feel hatti I'm 35 and was sterilized after my 3rd section 4 years ago.

For the last few months my periods have been really heavy, so bad that they stop me being able to feel comfortable in leaving the house.

I'm more worried about my raging hormones I am awfull in the few days before and the first couple of days. I'm thinking of seeing my doctor but I don't know if there is anything that can help me boiling up inside!!

BellaVita · 15/04/2012 21:00

I typed Adiana into Google and it does looklike they do it here in the uk but as to where am not sure. I would definitely be interested in both of those procedures, so will press for them tomorrow.

Well I went this morning. Asked about the Novasure, gp said a big fat no as it was too invasive.

She gave me an examination to make sure I didn't have fibroids etc.

I am going for a blood test tomorrow and I have to go back and see her next Monday and then we will decide what to do (she thinks I may be going through the change). She said the implant would be a good choice, but in the meantime should my period start before next Monday (should have started at the weekend) she has given me some tablets to take which should reduce blood loss.

That sounds positive Bella

Heavy bleeding isn't nice but I suffer more with my moods, I really swing from moody, vicious, weepy, mellow, happy and all the way round again.

Hope the blood tests help, do let us know how you get on.

I'm wondering if I should go to the doctor or just put up with being a witch one out of 4 week a month!!

hattifattner · 17/04/2012 05:48

bella, not to be a killjoy, but I suffered for 7 years, tried every potion/pill and device and finally they accepted that none of these were going to work. You may have a long journey ahead. My advice to you is to not just put up with it. Keep going back if it continues to be a problem. Keep asking for alternatives and if they are not working for you.
