Sterilisation at the same time as CS - any thoughts/experiences please?

I'm pg with DC3 and will be having a 3rd CS.

This baby was one of those surprise ones that comes about when you're a bit shit blase about taking the pill properly Hmm

Anyway, our family was complete with 2 DCs and is now DEFINITELY complete once DC3 arrives. We are SO sure about this! Smile

So my consultant mentioned I could be sterilised at the same time as the CS and I'm finding this quite attractive. But then I've read about it not working 100% with CS and there's a higher risk of ectopic pregnancy afterwards.

Has anyone had this done and can offer any advice, or point me to some online info?

Other option is for DP to have his balls cut off get the snip, but he seems a bit wimpy about it Hmm

TIA

Yep, I've read about the higher possibility of tubes re-ligating if done immediately post C-section.

If you are determined that this is the right course for you then I'd recommend waiting until the C-section scar has healed up and then booking yourself in. Alternatively you could adopt the belt-and-braces approach of coil+hormone implant+condoms!!

I know that sounds like contraceptive overkill, but some people like to preserve the possibility of having more kids just in case anything happens to their existing ones (dreadful to think of I know, but this happened in my family - parents had another baby expressly because my sibling died).

I hope you receive some advice from more informed people :)

thanks Herrena. the thought of ectopic pg is very scary. I think I might be very anxious about that constantly.

I feel like I've been on artificial hormones for long enough now - 20 years (christ I feel old!) so maybe it's DPs turn to do some contracepting!

The Mirena is more effective that sterilisation, so if you are really sure that you dont want more children that might be better (or vasectomy for DP), especially given the higher failure rate after CS. The Mirena has less hormones than pills.

Right, that's it, DP's going for it!
