And peppermint tea as you will be very windy (and the wind made my shoulders hurt terribly).

Take care of yourself.

Thankyou. I'll make sure I get some. I'm glad I posted this now !

I agree with Iainielou. I had quite a lot of bleeding after - like a heavyish period. Apparantly that's quite normal. I wasn't told about that beforehand though and thought something had gone wrong. I had a big bloaty tummy and was quite sore afterwards - found turning over in bed etc uncomfy. I have a very low pain threshold however. Deffo tracky bottoms. I was told to stay off work for a week but I ended up taking 3. Also had a sharp pain in shoulder afterwards due to wind. Also normal apparantly, but weird!!!!!!!!! Hope all goes well. Take care of yourself.

Are you sure you mean laparotomy, big cut down the middle? Because all the other answers are talking about laparoscopy, a keyhole approach.

bruxeur · 13/04/2012 19:08

Laparotomy takes longer to recover btw.

Methe · 13/04/2012 19:11

I was going to say, I had 2 weeks off for a laparoscopy (keyhole procedure) and still felt rough.

I was warned that if i had to have a laparotomy ( open procedure) I'd need at least a week in hospital and 6 weeks off work.

I had laparotomy to remove 6lb cyst and the ovary to which the monster was attached. Had op when ds was 12 weeks old. Felt crap from the general for a few days, left hospital 5 days post op. Remained weak for a week or so after and attended a wedding (full day/evening bash) 3 weeks after. And was fighting fit from then onward.
My scar is negligible - looked like a line drawn with felt tip for a few months. Has faded to white. Had internal stitches (dissolving kind) and steristrips on the outside.
In hospital you are likely to have a catheter so take a nighty. Don't brave it out if you are in pain post op - your pca is your friend.
I had no bleeding afterwards - surgeon said there was nothing to bleed from.
Blood count was abysmal - reaction to the anaesthetic - I just felt washed out but I didn't need a transfusion.
Oh yes, lots of wind.
I was on maternity leave when I had my op but would have got sick line for initial 8 weeks had I been at work.
You will be just fine op xxx

Yep, definitely a laparotomy i'm afraid...

Thanks for all your answers by the way. I was so stressed when I saw the consultant, I forgot to ask.

Sorry Serenola. I mis-read laparotomy as laparoscopy -( the keyhole jobby, which is what I had) and which is a less invasive procedure. Hope all goes well for you.
