Hi i wonder if anyone can help me sort this out: i've got a problem with my eating, what it is is that i seem to get insomnia after I've eaten certain kinds of food. There's a pattern as every thursday we get together for a family meal - usually with a pudding too - BUT every thursday nite/ friday morning i get a bout of insomnia - i can sleep my breathing seems to race my brain is in overdrive and i get cramp in my legs and IBS.

I know i have an intolerance to wheat and i think to preservatives, could this insomnia be 'cause of an intolerance to sugar? When i had a cholesterol test they found that my glucose level was higher than normal and my sister had the same thing too

do you get insomnia after eating out/socialising at other times?

Methe · 07/04/2012 20:44

Are you sure it's the food?

Fruit based alcoholic drinks have this effect on me.

Dinah yes i do get probs at other times - it just seems there's a pattern after our thursday night meal - sometimes i get it after i've eaten out or had a takeaway
Methe i can get insomnia if i'm worried or stressed but its a different kind - i don't get the racing breathing or manic feeling

i get insomnia a lot too and theres loads of things that set it off, so its quite possible its something youve eaten

Guess what this always happens to me on a Sunday night and I've always put it down to stress, as Monday morning is always manic in this house. I think it has now become a habit but it does not happen during schhol holidays Hmm

I find a food colouring present in some mushy peas makes my heart race, also wine and chinese food.

My Dad and Husband have a similar reaction to farmed salmon, topsi.

If you have a family get together perhaps all the chat is 'going around in your head' and you are thinking about the night and this is preventing you sleeping

Is the thursday family meal later and larger than you eat the rest of the week? If so it could just be your body is still trying to digest the food. Would possibly explain the IBS symptoms, cramps and insomnia. I often find I can't sleep after a meal out because I eat two or three courses compared to the one I'd eat at home and we tend to eat later when eating out.
