how do you deal with going away from home for a few days ? Something I find very difficult-am anxting about it well in advance as usual. Just feel a need to shout out for encouragement x

I don't have OCD but I do get a lot of anxiety about travelling (recently discovered I am probably an Aspie) so I really sympathise.

What are your OCD symptoms, specifically?

MaryAnnSingleton · 07/04/2012 13:21

it's mostly a huge feeling of anxiety about leaving my house without me there to keep it safe, the need to leave it all in order and checking that things are off/locked etc. i don't mind the travelling bit Smile

Can you write a list of all the things that need to be done (locking doors, windows etc)?

Is there a neighbour who can keep an eye on the house for you?

MaryAnnSingleton · 07/04/2012 13:45

yes, have tried that before and checked it off, but one of the OCD things is not believing what you've done. My dad is coming in to feed my cat,so that's good, but I still fret. It's silly as I have been through this for so long..I think because I'm not away that often it becomes a bit ofg a big deal. Thanks for responding [busmile]

Make the list AND ONLY DO THINGS ONCE! No repeating/rechecking. No asking your Dad to recheck whilst you're away - do not feed your OCD by seeking reassurance! You'll be fine and enjoy your trip away I'm sure Smile

you are right ameliameerkat -I know !

I have the same problem MaryAnnSingleton, And i feel the same way when i have to leave the house.

I get someone to check for me if I'm going for a while, and I KNOW it only feeds the OCD but it better than worrying.

Good Luck :)

thanks witch- I get dh to check too, though I quiz him about it all which drives him mad Smile

I drive my Dh mad too lol

CarpeJugulum · 12/04/2012 20:09

I have a checklist on the computer.

DH and I go round with the list and we both initial it. It is the VERY LAST thing that gets done - and the last item is "lock door" Blush

The checklist is then packed in my handbag. When I have a wobble, the list is there.

It saves driving back from a location 120 miles away overnight (and back) to check I have in fact locked the door. Blush

Thanks ! I made it out with dh's help - was much better than anticipated x
