I've just received a letter through the post calling me for breast screening. I am "only" 47 and thought routine breast screening did not start until 50. In fact, I recently had a smear, and the nurse asked me if I had had my mammogram and I pointed out my age and she agreed I wouldn't have had one yet.
I do know the screening takes place in a mobile unit and I think the nurse told me it only comes round once every few years (I forget how many years she said) so do you think they are screening me now because the mobile unit won't be around when I turn 50? Or has the age changed?
No reasons byeond normal routine screening for me to be screened btw. I have not been to GP about my breasts, and have no history of breast cancer in the family. I am not worried, just curious why I got my call now.
BTW, for those who have had the screening, can you tell me what to expect? The letter says it can be uncomfortable but surely only because you are squashing your breasts up against a machine? It's nothing more than that,is it?
TIA
