cut my finger about 2 wks ago. grating cheese. i know...
it has now become what i think is infected. looking red and angry, and hurting...
Sad i have to go to pharmacy tomorrow anyway to pick up some meds. am i likely to be able to get something that will clear this up, or am i better of booking appt with the gp? do not want to waste their time...

Try also sticking the finger into warm saltwater, as hot as you can stand, three times a day. Sometimes it draws out the pus. I have also had great success with Manuka honey in treating seriously infected ingrowing toenails on my son, if there's an obvious entry wound bit.

But you have to be sensible and keep checking that it's starting to get better.

This happened to me twice last yr (also once with cheese grater injury strangely enough!) and ended up with antibiotics both times - if going green and hurting def trip to GP.

thanks both Smile
i tried the warm salt water, which made it less painful. but this morning it was looking so grim and so painful that i thought i'd ask the pharmacist for advice: she sent me straight to the doctors, who put me on antibiotics. i have now sworn that i will never again use the cheese grater!! gp said that they are dangerous tools, but at least i hadn't been cutting meat.

I grated off most of my thumbnail and underneath once.....using the slicey bit, for potatoes.

I had to go to MI to get it dressed, left the house in a terrible state as I had tried to stop the bleeding for about 40 minutes, and nothing had worked...not even my tried and tested "run it under the cold tap"

Hope your antibs are making you feel better!

I had the same experience with a cheese grater and now do not even want to see the things. I shudder.

I always knew cheese graters were evil, hope your finger is feeling better.

Hm as it's been 2 weeks, I would say see the doctor if it is really painful swollen and red. Is there a hand clinic locally that could advise?
