Bleeding for 3 weeks; what could it be?

So, I had DD2 16 months ago; had a mirena put in about a year ago (and a smear at the same time). Since then hardly any periods, just spotting for half a day every so often (still bfing too). The about 3+ weeks ago I started what I thought was a proper period, but it is still going. Every so often it stops for a day or two, but there have been more bleeding days than not. Also have a mild pain in my right side (comes and goes).

Saw gp on Fri and se has done some swabs and referred me for a pelvic ultrasound. Any thoughts as to what she could be looking for? She said she thought the pain was too high for ovarian cyst but didn't give any indication of what it could be.

Did the GP see the coil strings in place? If it has come out or is out of correct position then there's a possibilty it might cause the bleeding, not sure about the pain (not a medic). Sounds like GP is getting on with investigation though so hope you get the u/s appt through fairly quickly.
Any history of endometriosis, IBS or appendicitis?

Possibly infection - prolonged bleeding is a sign of infection. See your GP.

Yup, she said the threads were fine. No history of anything, apart from an over-active thyroid, but I am struggling to see how they could be connected. Already got the u/s appt - they can do it at the surgery now - is booked for 3 weks time. hairytale - I have seen the gp, waiting for test results, just after suggestions of what they might show.
