soft spot on side of head

Nursery has just rung cos they noticed a soft spot on the side of ds2's head (he's 8 months). They describe it as like a fontanell, soft and spongey. They say they've just checked out the other babies and they don't have anything similar. Earlier in the week they asked me about an egg shaped bump on the same side of his head which they didn't notice him falling and knocking and nor did I. I made the connection between these - they hadn't noticed. I rang HV and she said to bring him in to the emergency surgery this pm (there are no appointments). I am worried, cos it's his head. What do you think?

The HV has probably asked you to come to the emergency surgery as a precaution rather than because she thinks it's something to worry about. Try not to get too stressed about it; it sounds as if he may have bumped or bruised his head, but babies do tend to bump their heads when they're rolling or crawling around and it's usually nothing to worry about.

I hope that they can put your mind at rest when they see him this afternoon.

Thanks WigWamBam

I guess I am worrying because dp's sister died of a brain tumour when she was tiny. He isn't worried, and he was there when it happened. I am worried cos I wasn't there and, well, and I'm a mum.

Have you seen the doctor yet, fisil? How did you get on?

fisil · 03/02/2006 17:14

Thanks for asking. Nursery rang again to say that the manager had had a look and that they definitely thought we should take him to a doctor. I rang up the doctors and they told me to bring him in immediately!

When I picked him up I could see why they were worried - the entire left side of his head was all raised and spongey! The doctor had a long look and in the end decided that it was probably a bruise that had spread, but that we should bring him back next week so she could check it was going down properly!

Oh fisil, I missed this on Friday. It must be worrying for you.

Hope it's gone down a bit now and that you get on OK with the doctor this week.
