How long recover for a broken hip?

My lovely MIL managed to trip up in the florist today, landed on her side and has broken her hip Sad. She is having an operation tomorrow.

Does anyone know how long she is likely to be in hospital for? Also what the recovery time roughly is? We have a holiday booked in the UK for the first week of June and all she is worried about is that she won't be able to make it. She is 71 btw.

Thanks Smile

It varies, usually patients are in hospital for a week (or there abouts). Recovery also depends on how active the patients are, some get up and walk around right away, other's need a bit more time.

My mother's having her hip replaced in May. I hope your MIL heals quickly and all goes well. Smile

Thank you. She's generally reasonably fit and healthy so hopefully this will go in her favour. My FIL had a hip replacement a couple of years back and recovered very well. Hope all goes well for your Mother in May.

That's good to hear. Smile Patients do tend to recover better if they are usually active.

Thank you :)

First off im so sorry this has happened and please take the next bit in the spirit its meant

For a patient who is having an elective hip replacement I'd expect them to be out in a week, but not for a broken hip. I know a handful of patients who've done that but the vast major take longer, in some cases much much longer (months).

It depends a lot on what your MIL was like before her accident. People normally take a step backwards , so if walking with no aids may need 1 stick, if 1 stick two sticks or a frame. A broken hip is a big deal and your MIL may need extra help once she's recovered at home depending on how well she gets on. This may mean accepting carers to come into her home or adjustments made (raised toilet seats, rails etc). Downstairs living may need to be considered.

I would say at the moment it's too soon to tell whether she'll be able to go with you. Although she almost certainly may be home by that time, a big trip may be too much. I certainly would play it by ear at this time and wait and see how the op goes and how she gets on over the next few weeks.

I don't meant to be doom and gloom, but it's important to be realistic and this isn't the same as having a new hip put in. I hope she gets better soon.
