high glucose result

I had a blood test for glucose and cholestrol as part of a health mot. I have been asked to go for a fasting glucose test as my result was high. Does this mean I have diabetes or do glucose levels show as high for other reasons. I'm 42.

Too soon to know, depends how high it was. It could be that it was borderline but high enough to warrant further investigation. The fasting blood test will give them a clearer idea. You can have slightly raised glucose levels if you're unwell for example. Diabetes would not be diagnosed on the basis of one random raised glucose test.

In the meantime don't panic! Even if you are showing signs of diabetes there are a number of treatment options. If you are overweight then losing weight might be enough to normalise your levels, or dietary/lifestyle changes might work before you even need to look at the medicine type options.

The thing about diabetes is it is at it's most dangerous when undetected. If you do indeed have it, you can take steps to minimise any effects on your health.

Good luck!

DH is diabetic and I sometimes test myself, I can be up as high as 8 but my long term sugar level is fine. My gp tests me too as I have PCOS and have a higher long term risk of diabetes.

Might be nothing but at least your gp is testing it.

Dont forget you cant have tea or coffee in the morning, even black they advise just water, no breakfast. DH takes a flask of tea with him for after.

Tahnks for both your replies. I feel a bit less worried now. I didn't know that I was going to have a blood test and did have rather an unhealthy lunch inluding a large coke beforehand. I spose that might have smth to do with it!
