Cystitis - What to do?

sparkle101 · 14/03/2012 14:44

I have had what I think is cysitis for the last week, I desperately need the loo the whole time and when I do it stings like anything. Afterwards I get shotting pains in my fanjo for a couple of minutes and then it just feels stingy and like I want to pee again.

The pharmacist told me it should clear up within a week and it so isn't, if anything it feels like it's getting worse.

What to do? I just want the pain to stop!

Go to the GP asap and get a) a swab and or urine sample taken just to make sure it is cystitis and not something else, and b) antibiotics.

If you have had it a week, cranberry juice etc is not going to work.

Cystitis / UTIs can develop into more serious infections and affect the kidney if not treated, so see your doctor.

I do feel your pain. I used to get terrible attacks of cystitis and it is hellish.

SparkyMcSparrow · 14/03/2012 14:50

I had some sachets that dissolved in water, they worked a treat when i had it. But i do think you should go to your GP

Itsboywonder · 14/03/2012 14:59

Definitely go and see your GP, I got this on holiday once so couldn't see a doctor, by the time I was home it had spread to my kidneys and I was very ill. Doctor will give you antibiotics and you will be fine.

Hi i'm a very reluctant expert about cystitis, unfortunately.
My record is 14 bouts in a year!

The over the counter sachets dissolved in water help make it much less painful to wee, so i would get some of those.

However, they do not cure or treat the cystitis at all, they rely on masking the symptoms while your body sorts itself out.

If you have had it for over a week and it is not going you do probably do need a short course of ab's to shift it, so i'd go to your gp. They can do an instant urine dip test to check it is a uti and then give you the tablets.

Cranberry juice/tables are now not recommended for uti infections, as they may actually make things worse so avoid these, even if people keep telling you to take them!

When you say it is getting worse, how so?
The danger with a uti is that it travels upwards and causes an infection in the kidney- this is called Pyelonephritis and it is very serious. The symptoms to watch out for are back pain, shivering, temperature and being / feeling sick. If you feel like you have these go to A & E immediately, and take an overnight bag as if it is Pyelonephritis they will keep you in for at least a couple of days to give you IV antibiotics.

If you haven't ever had it, it is hard to understand just how miserable a UTI can make you, so sorry for you rubbish week (Sorry if TMI but it is also a lot less painful to get into a warm bath and pee in there, also allows you to get more pee out, iyswim)

And you need to drink plenty too, i know this is the last thing you want to do with cystitis, but it really does help. I used to suffer terribly, but i am now much better. I also have sachets already indoors in case i need them....prevention is better than cure, and they cost me i think about a pound in tesco and do really help, if you go into boots they are more expensicve but do work. With cystitis it is not a nasty sexual infection or anything and nothing to be ashamed of, i felt it was cos my first bout was at 17, but i said the symptons to the doctor and he was like, yep sounds like a urine infection, nothing to worry about, could you do a urine sample. When i asked why, he said, oh its fairly common, and mainly in women, its just to do with bacteria! All so matter of fact, not like urr thats horrid sort of a thing!

sparkle101 · 14/03/2012 16:15

It feels like it's getting worse as now I feel constantly stingy/painful whereas before today I just needed the loo a lot and had the pains, but nothing between IYSWIM?

It doesn't sound like its Pyelonephritis yet, but it doesn't sound like my experience of 'just' cystitis any more either. Can you go to the GP? Do you have a reason to find it difficult to go due to past experience etc?

sparkle101 · 14/03/2012 17:01

No no, not at all, am intending to make an appt tomorrow (but they are having a half day so hoping I can get one) but I didn't want to be seen to be over reacting, if I didn't need to go and someone more in need needed an appt!

Sorry for TMI but have AF this week, is that going to be a problem?

WhyAlwaysBoris · 14/03/2012 17:12

I know the feeling of not wanting to be overreacting when resources are scarce, but honestly go. My GP once said to me that people who think like that are never the ones who are going unnecessarily!

If AF arrives by the time of the urine test it will throw the results slightly as they test for blood in the urine, and it wont be clear if it is from AF or an infection, but they also test for white cell count from infection etc so they will still be able to tell what is going on.

A week is long enough to be soldering on!
Sending you hugs

MyLittleMiracle · 14/03/2012 18:39

I done the same with my first uti, scared it was a sti, it wasnt and i felt a melon!

Fluffycloudland77 · 14/03/2012 19:56

If you see your pharmacist they sell a liquid, its potassium citrate? anyway it works out really cheap way to make your wee less painful.

When I had mine I drank 3ltrs of water for two days. It went. Yours is probably worse though.

poppadoodle · 15/03/2012 12:07

Some can go on their own some need antibiotics, I had few of these they are horrible. I know if i need antibiotics and make sure i get them asap, I had one and left it and ended up with kidney infection when i was 5 months pregnant and i felt like i was dying. Barley water is supposed to be good natural remedy too but if you stil ill after a week I'd say defo get antibiotics

sparkle101 · 15/03/2012 13:07

Thank you very much for all your replies, made me realise I'm not just faffing! Had doctors appt this morning and have been prescribed anti b's to take for a week and they took a sample. I went to bed at 7:30 last night as couldn't take the pain! Thanks again ladies!
