DD is covered in a rash.........

I'm not quite sure whether to ring someone or how common a rash like this is....

She started off this afternoon in town saying she had a sore throat and a headache and she had a rash on her belly and chest. I got her some buttercup syrup and headed for home. She picked up a bit and said she wanted food so got her some but she didn't eat much. We then got the bus and she was trying her hardest not to fall asleep then said her head had started hurting again. When we got off the bus she was sick. Straight away she picked up again and was acting as 'normal' and the rash had gone. She went to bed and has been asleep ever since. I've just gone up to check on her and the rash is now all over her front her arms and her legs... I tried to see her back but she wouldn't turn over and I don't want to wake her if I don't need to.

Is anyone around any the wiser with regard to rashes??

Call NHS Direct. Don't know what it might be, but sounds worth taking seriously.

How old is she?

what does the rash look like?
have you done the glass test?
does she have a high temp?

She's 4. She hasn't got a temp. She had one a couple of days a go in the middle of the night but was fine by morning. I'm off up to do the glass test now - I just had to look up exactly what I'm looking for....

press a glass on the rash... it should fade under pressure

If it does fade it could be a reaction to a virus she has.

DD has been getting them an I've been told thats what it is.

zepher, IT is very common for children to get hives allong with a viral infection. This looks like nettle rash and usually gets worse when the child is warm. Meningitis is a purple rash that will not dissapear when yoo roll a glass over it. If she is othe wise well it is v unlikely to be a menigecocal rash.

HOWEVER when in doubt phone nhs 24 and they will ask you some further questions to confirm a diagnosis.

Right have taken her temp again - 99.1 so not too worried there. Did the glass thing but i'm not sure about that - it doesn't disappear altogether but mostly. It's not a purple rash though, it's more like a spotty heat rash all over her. She's still got a headache so am going to ring NHS line just to see what they think... thanks for all your replies

just to say that DS2 (9 mths) is just getting over this - woke up one morning absolutely covered in spots, but no temp or other symptoms. took him to A & E (at end of our road virtually!) and they said post viral thingy. Sure you will be fine but ringing NHS Direct is a good idea just to put your mind at rest. Take care.

Gave them a ring just to put my mind at rest.... 'if no-one rings in the next 3 hours feel free to ring back' !! thanks then!! I'm guessing it's more viral than anything else but is one of those horrible things where you think the worst

You do fear the worst don't you? Hospital said only to worry if got temp/sick/generally not themselves.Can you go to GP tomorrow just to check?

Will def take her in the morning - she definately wasn't right earlier on, I could only just keep her awake...and she said no to chocolate bless her!

If she's OK in herself now I'm sure it's fine. Bit at NHS though (3 hrs?!!!) Got to go to bed - hope you have a good night.

zephyr,,,hello!!

I would definatley get it checked out just to be safe but Amelia is just getting over what sounds very similar. Has had a temperature, full of cold, off her food and came out in spots. Very similar to chicken pox rash, started off quite raised with a head. She didn't get the rash all over her body, just her little face! Obvoiusly because of her delayed communication she couldn't really tell me what was hurting but shortly afterward I had a terrible sore throat, felt flu like, headache....DS then got it but he was physically sick with his..no cold..but a really bad throat.

One way or another there is a rotten bug going around, but get it checked out anyway.

Most likely it's a viral thing but scarlet fever is doing the rounds at the moment according to a doctor that saw my ds last week. Main symptom is a very sore throat - and then red rash over body. Scarlett fever is caused by bacteria so needs treating with anti-biotics.

Hello Dingle How are the little monsters?! (The cats of course ) Poor Amelia...doesn't sound nice at all

Bluebear - funny you should mention scarlet fever, when I looked up rashes I got the emedicine website and the description of that sounded the closest type of rash along with a sore throat - sounds like it's a lot more common than I thought as well so could well be it...

I was a bit shocked when the doc. mentioned it the other day - but it seems to be more common than you think, and one of the few things where you really do need antibiotics! Ds didn't have it - his rash was an allergic reaction...hope your dd feels better soon.

NHS direct rang me back at 2am!! I was getting a precious hours sleep at the time so they left a message sayig "If you want our help you'll need to ring back" - almost snotty at the fact I hadn't answered!

DD is her usual self this morning but still has the remains of a bit of rash - I feel like I 've been hit by a truck after about 3 hours sleep!!

nhs direct are crap. I had a scare with dd last week and we were told someone would ring back in 2 hours. So I phoned casualty and they can't speak to anyone (WTF), bloody nhs. If you go to casualty they'll help but they can't bloody help over the phone with general advice.

daisy It does seem crap I know, but the reason is that telephone diagnosis is dangerous if not dont properly. They prob could have given you advice, but they wouldn't have to ask you all the questions they need to get an accurate diagnosis. The nurses areusually in the middle of something.
Plus if we were to giev you incorrect info through not having the proper detail, we would be liable for neglectful care etc. This was one of the reason nhs 24 got set up..
Though this waiting for 3 hrs to speak to someone is utter nonscence.

Zepher, am glad shes better, my ds had the same type of symtoms, rash always looked worse after a nap, turned out just to be viral.

Hate that phrase, viral infection!

I've always found NHS direct pretty handy - esp for these things where you are never quite sure if they need to see someone or not. The only thing that was a bit off putting last night is that whenever I have rung before, the lady has always been loely and talked through what was wrong etc and been very helpful... last night I got a guy who sounded like he just had a list of questions ie are her lips blue, is she having trouble breathing, has she got a purple rash etc... basically if it's nothing life threatening someone will ring you later.
The more personal way was much nicer and lots more reassuring!
