Id definately see the GP - any poo related changes that go on for more than a couple of weeks need to be investigated.

BelleEnd · 13/03/2012 11:29

Go to your GP! It's not really embarrassing, don't go worrying about that.

Yep go to the GP

belcantwait · 14/03/2012 13:58

Ok so I went to the doctor which was embarrassing but he made me feel I was right to go and actually ive felt pretty rotten today. Think I've kind of 'normalised' it for such a long time. He's booked me in for blood tests for next week to test thyroid, liver function and coeliac. Then the week after I have to see my usual (female) gp for a, oh god oh god, rectal exam
I'm hoping blood might just show a food intolerance and I can avoid the indignity of the doctors hand up my bum Blush
He asked about family history of inflammatory bowel disease and bowel cancer but I don't know as am adopted
He did say it could just be down to stress but I don't feel stressed but maybe ivenormalised that as well Confused

You can ask to have someone with you for the examination, a nurse should be able to hold your hand if you want. I had one when I was hospitalised for gallstones, it was v quick and not too uncomfortable :)

belcantwait · 14/03/2012 14:09

Ninthwave thank you yes maybe I'll ask the nurse though part of me thinks the less people to witness the indignity the better!
Did you lie down forit or was it, as my mother kindly informs me, done with your arse in the air?? You don't have to answer that if you don't want to!!

You lie on one side. They usually cover everything but your bum with that paper towel stuff to preserve as much of your mmodesty as possible. Try and make sure you've been for a poo before the exam.

MrsEricBana · 14/03/2012 14:28

Oh I totally understand re the examination but they will be so discrete and will not be awful. As OHF says, you lie on your side and look at the wall, you are not unduly uncovered and they do it very matter of factly. Honestly! You will be 100% fine and will be so glad if they can give you something to help you feel better. Hope you feel much better soon.

Badgerwife · 14/03/2012 14:35

Try and make sure you've been for a poo before the exam

oh dear god

belcantwait · 14/03/2012 15:14

I second that badgerswife eeeek
Thing is that's part of the problem... As in I need to bloody poo all the time. COuld be messy Blush

Hi,
I've had many rectal examinations and it is uncomfortable and unpleasant but I just have to accept it. I use a peristeen (a type of bowel catheter irrigation system) that I sometimes have help with from nurses.
I do cringe every time I have it done, but I've lost count how many times I've had someone's face /fingers by a doc /nurse down there reacting to my bladder /vagina /bowels.
