ulcerative colitis?

hi, wondering if anyone can help with experiences. For 2 and a half weeks I have had blood in my stools, and lots of mucus, also loose stools (sorry, TMI!) I went to see GP a week ago and have had bloods taken, am having a sigmoidoscopy (sp?) on Wed with GP. Feeling a bit nervous about suppositories beforehand so am not going into work that day- is that silly? The closest I can get from googling (bad, I know) is ulcerative colitis. Other symptoms: sadly no weight loss, in fact almost the opposite- have been going to gym and eating quite well and not lost anything. Get very bloated, feel shattered, slightly sick feeling often, some indigestion, achey stomach like period pains but higher up, often light headed. Thanks

"Feeling a bit nervous about suppositories beforehand so am not going into work that day- is that silly?"

Of course it isn't silly. You won't be able to go to work as the stuff will be pouring out of you like no tomorrow. It is ultra important that your bowel is totally empty as they won't get a clear result. Good luck, I hope it isn't serious.

I didn't want to "scare" you if that is the right word, but I have had a colonoscopy and needed to be totally empty beforehand. Just retire to the bathroom with a good book.

Sorry about your horrid symptoms. They could be from a viral/bacterial infection but the sygmoidoscopy will provide a lot more info as to what is going on. DD was diagnosed with UC 2 years ago aged 24 after 4 years of being treated for IBS. Now she is on appropriate medication her symptoms are far better controlled.

Just for comparison purposes these are her symptoms when she is having a flare up of UC: bloated/sticky-out stomach especially after a meal (she is very slim but after a meal can look around 4 months pregnant!), passing blood and mucus (quite a lot of blood at times), constipation/diarrhoea, extreme fatigue, painful, sore joints, stomach pain (was once admitted to hosp with suspected appendicitis which in hindsight was a flare up of the UC, weight loss, loss of appetite, nausea, looks pale/unwell. Hopefully as you have had problems for a short time, whatever is causing your problems will soon be diagnosed and treated and you will be feeling much better soon. Its not silly at all to take day off when you have suppositories. Lots of luck for Weds.

thanks so much tuna, thats really helpful. Sorry for your DD tho, hope its all under control now. I have many of the symptoms you mention- especially bloatedness-today is ridiculous, and def been feeling/looking unwell. Achey yes, even my eye sockets, strange. Otherwise not really been in pain which is lucky. Fingers crossed it will be something sortable tomorrow. Thanks again

Glad you have a diagnosis. Yes it is a mystery about all your other symptoms. A virus perhaps? Hope you are soon feeling better. Glad its not UC as that can be quite a challenge to manage judging by DDs experience so far.

PaigeTurner · 15/03/2012 20:19

V glad to find this thread as have same symptoms as OP and was starting to fret. Now hoping it's just a virus, or post-viral as I had a flu like bug just before this came on. Hope you are feeling better now. OP!

Thanks, I am, it seems to be settling down. Think I was run down / virus / or something. Hope you are well soon Paige!

Back to Gp last week as it has been worse, appointment at hospital today- there is colitis so could well be UC, colonoscopy in next couple of weeks for proper look. Think I feel relieved...???

Sorry you've been having more problems plusonemore. Am sure you will know more after colonoscopy. I think the hardest time is before you really know what's wrong and aren't on suitable medication. Hopefully once you know what's what and get something to help, you will start to feel lots better. If it is UC It can be rather trial and error finding something that's good for you judging by DDs experience but generally she has things in far more of a containment situation since getting the correct diagnosis and trying a few different types of tablets/pessaries over the past year. Let us know how you get on.
