Heliobacter Pylori - Treatment Protocol - How Long???

I'm wondering if anyone has experience of this & can help with my question :)

I'm currently on my second course of treatment for this stomach infection, but as it didn't clear up completely the first time around & I was then on a 2 week course of combined antibiotic treatment, I'm a bit concerned that the treatment they now have me on is only for a week, though it is different drugs??

I'm currently on Metrodizonole (sp) Clarythrimicin(sp) & an acid suppressant - they are knocking me for 6, but obviously I want the treatment to work this time - lots of comings & goings of different GPs for me at the moment (had 2 go off on maternity leave) so I'm not sure if this is right - I tend to be a bit resistant with antiBs anyway & with other recurrent infections need a longer, stronger dose - though as I say thats not this particular infection - perhaps this is a stronger AntiB ??

TIA :)

Hi,

I never had HP confirmed but it was evident I had it and I was put on acid reducers as I developed Severe stomach pain, sickness and GORD. That was all the GP was willing to do. I had two GPs ask me if I was categorically certain I wasn't pg as I looked 5mo pg I was so swollen. I eventually got it under control by changing my diet. I avoided red meat, wheat, anything acidic like oranges and alcohol. Saw improvements within about six weeks but it was six months before I started to eat 'normally' again.

Can you ask for a referral to a specialist?

What were your symptomd?I found out i had it from tests done ( i felt like there was a lump in my throat) i had never heard of it before . I was put on a triple antibiotic. Don't know if it worked or not as i didn't know anything about it. Still suffer with lump in throat. May be gastric reflux so am giving up oranges and tomatoes.any otjer suggestions?

I wrote a long reply to this the other day & the site when down on posting, so lost it Hmm

Slow I would definitely recommend getting tested & treat if positive, - don't let them fob you off - it can get far worse as mine did & is also linked to cancer

annie - yes I also had the lump in throat feeling for years, also lots of heartburn, reflux etc, bloated swollen stomach, very painful acid in chest feeling, couldn't bend & often refluxing acid & making me sick - bloating was so much so I sometimes looked pregnantHmm - it got worse depending on what I ate - fatty/oily foods being the worst

As time went on I also started loosing my voice - for 6 months in the beginning - but keeping on complaining got me sent to an ME clinic & severe ME diagnosis Hmm - I never did feel that was right - I had very painful throat, though felt more bruised than normal viral type sore throats - used to describe it as feeling like someone had forced a baseball bat down my throat - I often couldn't sleep for coughing & more recently was waking up with sore, dry cracked & bleeding sinuses & swollen mouth lining & sore tongue - GP reckoned that was all down

I also had a weird symptom that I couldn't get any GP to understand or take seriously, but it was very debilitating, difficult to describe, but on bending or twisting certain ways - even sitting up & turning to get out of the bath would set it off, felt like my ribs actually got hooked on something - very painful & left me feeling sick & shaky for ages after it had got loose - after the first batch of treatment it went completely for months & then along with other symptoms gradually came back - also left side chest pain on lying down - that got me sent for heart tests, nothing showed but gave me an angina pump "just incase" Hmm - that too went last treatment, but came back

GP did say that the symptoms are often mild, but mine were very severe & she agreed it can get that way for some if left?.I do also have Fibromyalgia, which affects pain sensitivity, so that maybe why I feel it more, but throat symptoms etc where there to see

Nearly finished second lot of triple treatment - been a rough ride as I'm prone to drug side effects, but fingers crossed its gone for good this time - symptoms have eased a lot - slept through the night for the first time in months & can almost talk normally again - GP did say & I know for last time that I will stay on the acid suppressants for quite a while, as it takes a while for the swelling in the stomach lining to subside after the infection clears.

Now have another new GP :( - & she was a bit dismissive of my asking if the treatment was long enough - she reckoned I probably didn't need it yet her far more experienced counterpart accurately diagnosed my ongoing problems last time & it came back Angry

Fingers crossed the course is long enough

X

Confused - that line should have read - GP reckoned that was all down to acid seeping up when lying down & burning the whole lining right up to my sinuses

What foods are good if you have this condition?

rockinhippy · 17/03/2012 11:54

I've found acidic & fatty food aggravate it,

Do bear in mind though, if you've only recently finished treatment, my GP explained to me, that with a chronic infection, the stomach lining inflammation can take a long time to settle down, much longer than the course of treatment - IYSWIM - first time round for me I was kept on acid suppressants for several months after I had finished with the antiBs -

its the inflammation that reduces the size of your actual stomach & makes the acid "reflux" upwards, as theres just not enough space in the stomach to hold it all - so that might be something to bear in mind too
