13 month old with tonsilitis- food questions!

DS has tonsilitis and an ear infection (in one ear only). I didn't take him to the GP for a week as his only symptom was being totally off his food and a bit sleepier. He is otherwise happy as normal.

He does have phases of not eating for 2 or 3 days at a time, hence why I left it for a while. Thing is he's doing odd things eating wise! He will only eat breadsticks, biscuits and mushed up avocado in any quantity beyond ONE bite! I would have thought the breadsticks would be the last thing he wanted. He is totally refusing to be spoon fed but equally throws finger food on the floor (apart from breadsticks)! Is this all part and parcel of DS suffering from tonsilitis? Also, how long do AB's normally take to start working? I've forgotten

In the meantime, I've been topping DS up with more milk if he is hungry but won't eat iyswim. Is this a good idea? Sorry if I sound neurotic but I am going insane with preparing meals that are refused every time and a baby that is obviously hungry!

breadsticks turn to mush in the mouth though

try bland mashed foods .. it must be sore

and give him some ice cream (if you want) as the cold helps anaesthetise it

Very true about the breadsticks, Twiglett. I try yoghurts and ice cream every day but he rarely has more than a mouthful.

I'm getting quite worried that this is more of a long term thing than the tonsilitis.

He has only been on AB's for a 24hrs. Should they have some effct by tomorrow, does anyone know?

DS was very off his food with tonsilitis. I was quite relaxed about his food and let him have jelly, chocolate mousse etc which I wouldn't normally allow so much. Balanced this with homemade turkey and veg soup which he wasn't very impressed with. He's 4 so it's a bit different than your situation. Maybe try mashed potato and let him eat it with his fingers. And maybe with cheese grated in.

poor lad - I had tonsilitis last year and it was agony. I went completely off my food - it's like having barbed wire at the back of your throat so he probably eats a mouthful, realises it hurts then stops eating.

Are you giving him calpol or nurofen aswell? Perhaps give him some calpol an hour or so before a meal and he might feel a bit better.

I think it can take a few days before the antibs kick in - also, some tonsilitis can be viral (this is what the doc told me when trying to fob me off without antibs!) so it may take a few more days to clear.

Call them back if you are worried though because he's still quite little! Hope he gets better soon.

I would be happy for him to exist on jelly and choc mousse while ill but he won't even have that. I am really starting to climb the walls now tbh. I think that's because he doesn't really seem ill at all- still happy playing etc but just won't eat...for a week now!! Infuriating!

Foxinsocks- he's only had about 1 dose of calpol a day because he's not seemed ill at all. Have just given him some now though .

bakeacake - I found that a couple of weeks after DS recovered from his tonsilitis (and he looked visibly thinner) that his appetite returned with a vengeance and he was clearing the plate in seconds instead of his usual messing about at meal times.

That's good to hear Bozza. I counted properly today and it's 10 days since he had more than a couple of bites at a meal. He's just had tea and it was 3 mouthfuls of avocado and a tiny bite of bread. I'm getting so weary and worried about this. He's been on AB's a full 48hrs now.

Is there any chance that he is just messing me around?? I know that sounds really awful but hereally doesn't seem to be suffering most of the time. I am resorting to giving him loads of snacks (doesn't add up to much at 2 bites of something at a time). He even had his first bit of choccie biscuit yesterday!

sorry to be a bore and drag this thread up again but I'm going out of my mind slightly!

Last day of AB's and day 12 of refusing meals . Went to a diff dr yesterday and he said there's a bit of fluid behind DS' ear drum but didn't say his ear was red. Throat-wise he said it was only a little red. He offered other AB's if I wanted but I said no thanks.

Today decided I was going to not fill DS up on milk but he has eaten even less today. What shall I do? Phone the emerg doc tonight and get a 2nd opinion tomorrow? This cannot be normal. I am pretty chilled when DS goes off food for 2-3 days but I do feel 12 days is a long time . It's hard to be consistently chilled at every meal for that long...

Meant out of hours doc, not emergency one!
