Hello. Since having my baby who is now 13 monthsi have had the occasional migraine-about once a month. I am noticing a pattern though and it seems to be preceeded by a very low mood almost blackness and extreme irritation,i also keep yawning and dropping things because am very clumsy. I have had some pnd and am on 20mg of prozac so have been putting the moods down to that but i am now wondering if it is the way my migraines manifest themselves.I guess i should see the gp,do they still use preventative meds?

Thanks for reading.

They're often hormonal, aren't they? I know there are a wide range of symptoms and triggers.

My mum and sister get horrible ones and have to avvoid dark chocolate, red wine, too much caffeine.

I tend to get them in pregnancy and while they don't seem to link to a mood, I know if I'm getting one cos I lose vision in one eye - like a hole through my vision. During one, I don't want to speak to anyone and after I struggle to remember words.

Definitely hormonal with me (9 times out of 10 its the day before my period) 1 in 10 I can usually put down to being particularly stressed. Often one side of my face goes tingly and feels numb and then one of my eyes starts to hurt. If I don't get the paracetemols down within a couple of minutes its too late and they have no effect whatsoever, I just have to wait until I'm sick and can sleep it off.

Some migraine meds (and related meds, like anti emetics) are very effective but only if used at the absolute outset of symptoms. There are several types, Imigran being one of the most common. Some over the counter pain relief can help but it's a question of trial and error. For example, paracetamol and asprin don't touch the sides with mine, but occasionally ibuprofen can nip things in the bud. The GP prescribed me Naproxen which can definitely help if I take it straight away.

My warning signs are forgetting words, colours seeming brighter and cravings for food I should never have in the face of a migraine - mainly sugary foods, particularly chocolate. These come before a 'classic migraine' (the flashing lights sort) and I also suffer from the agonising pain and vomiting kind. These tend to have no 'pre' symptoms and can only be helped with a lie down in a dark room, just the thing that can't be done while looking after the DCs! Both types are followed by feeling very low, hopeless, floppy and exhausted with life in general.

I think a trip to the GP could be helpful; they can discuss the options for meds available to you as well as dietary advice etc. Good luck. Mine are debilitating when they come. I stopped drinking all alcohol a couple of months ago and things have improved immeasurably since.

Thanks everyone.
I took 2 ibruprofen and it seems to have warded it off.I looked it up and i have some of the classic warning signs.Defo food cravings, clumsiness and feeling tired and yawning a lot. Im going to keep an eye on it as it seems to be around mid cycle.
Has anyone tried Syndol?I took 2 during the last one and it took it right off.

Whether I am hormonal or not, my first sign of a migraine, usually for a day before is bad moods and snappiness. Usually at dh and my mum. I have to apologize but they understand that it is my brain being in charge.
Tis horrible!
