breathlessness - an aftereffect of childbirth/spinal?

recently i've been feeling worryingly breathless. i'm short of breath when i'm sitting on the sofa!

I have no other symptoms (apart from a moment of slight panic that i might be seriously ill?)

Could this be anything to do with the spinal I had after the birth of my child (3 months ago)?

i'd be interested to hear if anyone has experienced this after a spinal

Didn't get this with a spinal but did when I was aneamic, have you had your iron levels checked?

JenJam · 30/01/2006 22:45

aahh thank you geo - that could be it.

i lost 350 ml? during the birth (a little more than the normal amount apparently)

and at my 6 week check dr suggested i got to hosp for blood test. but becuase i've permanently got a vampire like complexion id din;t think it that important....

must get it checked out

jenjam - you should do!
i was in hospital the week before last because of serious blood loss, and i had been very breathless too.
i was too busy taking care of baby to think about myself and ended up passing out, which was very scary when in sole charge of ds.
my haemoglobin was at 9 and it should be 11 -5

I had this after my section and spinal. It was found to be caused by anaemia and did respond quite quickly to iron tablets. Go to your GP who will send off a blood sample, results only take 2 days. In the meantime take a pregnancy supplement and east lots of iron rich foods. If you have any pain in your legs or chest it might be the sign of something more serious and phone your GP straight away.

thnkas i feel a bit silly for having not got it checked out, breathless comes and goes and too busy concentrating on baby. BoB passing out sounds very scary...what caused you to lose alot of blood during your birth

i know jenjam..i was too busy 'babying' to remember my iron tablets and to rest etc.
i had a retained placenta, which was manually removed in pieces. they think that a piece was still attached and it came out at about 6 weeks post birth causing a mild haemorraghe.
there was discussion of the scary piece of 'steak' i nmy panys on the nov. postnatal board..i was too silly to take it seriously, hence ended up in hospital.

go see the doctor lady! if you're anaemic they can sort you out right away, before it possibly turns into something worse.

I too would urge you to go to your GP ASAP as breathlessness at rest can also be a sign of a blood clot. This is rare, but potentially serious, particularly for a woman who has fairly recently given birth. It is far more likely that you are anaemic, but I would get it checked out soonish.

I was very breathless after having DS and put it down to pregnancy, pushing heaving baby round etc. BUT it turned out that I had lung inflamation and an illness called Scleroderma. GO TO THE DR!!!
