A couple of months ago I banged my big toe. The nail went black and brittle. Now it's so weak it's literally split all along the bottom and is hanging off. Minging.

I can see underneath its all black and bruised. I'm going to see a chiropodist and no doubt they'll completely remove the nail. But eww it'll look horrendous with no nail :/.

Please tell me it'll grow back, someone?

Yes it will grow back Smile

I think the only way it wouldn't grow back is if the chiropodist removed the nail and put a chemical in the nail bed that stops it growing back. But that's used for ingrowing nails rather than minting ones Grin

It'll grow back, takes about 6 months

It will grow back. This happened to me,had to go to a wedding and wear sandals so went to beauticians and she did a sort of gel nail extention job on it and it looked great.(and lasted for ages)
But go to chiropodist to get the minging one removed before it gets infected underneath.

Happened to me too. Used to do a lot of dance and repeatedly banging my left big toe against the end of the shoe ended up with the nail on my big toe black, thick and hanging off. I did nothing about it for AGES hoping it would just get better Hmm but eventually went to a chiropodist. He took it off really easily, cleaned it up, tutted at me for not getting it dealt with sooner. As soon as it was off, it didn't hurt nearly as much. Nail grew back just fine. DO get it sorted before you rip it - that will hurt like HELL.

Ouchie!

I am a fan of running - and luckily 'touch wood' have yet to succumb to the 'black toenail'. it is very common apparently - due to the nail hitting the front of the shoe repeatedly -as caramomginger reports.

It should grow back - but will take a few months.
