What happens if I take too much metformin?

I take metformin for PCOS rather than diabetes. All info about accidental overdose comes from the diabetes angle (ie your insulin/glucose gets out of whack and you might ultimately go into diabetic coma). But what would happen to me as a non-diabetic?

Surely the same will be true as Pcos is essentially an insulin imbalance

Eek! In that case I might be more careful about remembering if I've already had one.

What dosage are you on? I took 3 x 500g daily - one with each meal as it reduced the side effects. Could you take them like that so that it is easier to remember if you've had one?

3x500 as well. The problem is that I try to graze on low GI stuff throughout the day rather than having 3 fixed meals (I've found it helped with weightloss etc) and so on a couple of occasions I've just taken the tablet without thinking, then realised that I already had one a couple of hours previously. I seem ok so far, but it's not a great idea to fall into laxness about such things, so was really hoping for some dire warnings to scare me into being better at remembering.

I was always terrified of taking too many and having terrible diarrhoea so would always err on the side of caution!

Northey · 13/02/2012 23:47

I never suffered a single digestive side effect (slightly annoyingly, actually, as I secretly hoped it would help get rid of a couple of extra lbs).

Sorry, that wasn't a gloat!
