Low progesterone symptoms post baby

Hallo everyone

I was just wondering if anyone had any advice for me. To give some back ground i had a baby boy a year ago and suffered terrible post natal insommnia which then led onto low grade depression for about 4 months. I had a mirena coil put in (which i had in for 5 years before pregnancy and had no problems with atall) and soon after got my first period which made me feel considerably better. During this time though my cycle which had been a short 21 days fell to 16 days and i experienced terrible stomach aches. 3 weeks ago i had my mirena coil taken out and since then have suffered 3 periods and the most awful hormonal rollercoaster. My sleep had gone out of the window and i felt like i was going to lose my mind. After speaking to my lovely doctor we discussed that i was showing symptoms of low progesterone and my pni and pnd could well have been caused by my body not producing enough progesterone after pregnancy and the insterion of the progesterone coil, Mirena, had balanced me out. In removing it my body had reverted to its original post baby state and the old symptoms had turned up. I am now having my coil put back in but have to wait 3 weeks so until then she has put me on Cerezette (progesterone only pill) which seems within a few days to have made a massive difference.

The intention is to try for another baby this year, maybe in the autumn but i am concerened as to when this coil comes out again and wondered if anyone had any suggestions as to how i might be able to manage this period of time. Clearly if I do have low progesterone maintaing a pregnancy might be tricky so am wondering if the docs can prescribe something to keep my levels up or if anyone who has been in the same situation has been to a naturapathic doctor? O and my doc also said that as soon as baby was born i could go on Cerezette and then have my coil put in at 6 weeks to mitigate the pni and pnd rearing its ugly head - anyone found that hepful?

sorry, long post- just lots of quetions!!!

Has the doctor actually tested your blood to see what your hormone levels are through the month?

davlotte77 · 11/02/2012 14:16

i asked her about doing a test and she said they were very unreliable when it came to this kind of thing.

But her opinion on the problem isn't unreliable? Have you asked to see a gynaecologist?

Well its tricky as you have to spend a month completly off all hormone related contraception and as my symptoms are so appalling when i don't have a helping progesterone hand i suppose its not really worth it. Hadn't thought of asking to see a gynae.
