I've got my Mum staying with me because she woke up this morning and room was spinning then she was sick etc. Doctor came and it turns out it's vertigo. Anyone got any suggestions or know how long it will last. Dr given her medicine but just wondering how long it might last

my mother had this and it lasted 2-3 weeks. I don't think they could give any idea of how long it will last.

mine laested a few weeks 1st time. sea sickness tablets really helped me.

If it's viral labyrinthitis, my sympathy to your mum. It can take a few days for the severe spinning and nausea to stop. I presume the GP prescribed Stemetil or something to lessen the symptoms. It can take several weeks for things to get back to normal. Maybe sooner, if she is lucky. Poor thing!

God your poor Mum...
I had this recently, I turned over in bed one night.. and it happened just like that.. I think I was bad for about 3 days then I went back to work but I had to be careful about moving quickly.
The only way to describe it would be like carrying a bowl of water, when you move your head it sloshes and takes a while to catch up, and the movement to go....

oh no- sounds horrible. She's pretty miserable. Were you able to eat okay- thomcat did you take the sea sick tablets as well as proper medication?

I wouldn't take the sea sickness tablets on top of what the doctor has prescribed.

I had labyrithitus a few years agao & it lasted a good 2 weeks. You feel really grim & although the tablets from Doc made the room spin less they did make me feel quite sick. Once you have had it it can reoccur - I have had mild bouts of it since, but thankfully never again like the first time. I had been to the cinema - was fine when I went in, couldn't walk when I came out. Went to casualty complainin of dizziness, unable to walk in straight line, being sick - hmmm 11pm on a Saturday night - I was there with every drunk in the North-West!!

Hope your Mum gets better soon.

I've had labyrinthitis as well, and anything from a few days to a few weeks is normal, sorry! Driving can bring on symptoms just when you think you are over it, so if she drives warn her to be very careful indeed.

Still puking daily and falls at least 5 times a day.

Tasa · 23/01/2006 22:25

oh woollyboots that's a bit scary, [shock} sorry to hear that, three years is a bit excessive, have you tried not picking her up one of the times she falls?

Both times I've had vertigo it's been a couple of days. Horrid. My sympathy to your mother.

woollyboots · 24/01/2006 08:16

Yes Tasa tried that but she just lies there and still is sick. Up or down she pukes. She has also broken 23 bones in that time. Anyway good luck.
