Just been to doc and got my prescription for Champix (stop smoking tablets). Tried them couple of years ago and they made me nauseous but have decided to give them a go again!
Have decided to post this here as I want to keep a track of how I get on with these tablets and see how I finally kick a 30 year old habit

I've done Champix twice. first time they made me very ill, though I did give up smoking. Stayed off them 18 months. 2nd time round I stayed on them the full 12 weeks and have been off them over 2 years now

My advice would be take them with something decent food wsise - I found a biscuit wasn't enough, had to be more like a sandwich or a bowl of cereal. And drink about a pint of water when you take them, it gives them something to dissolve in. If you start feeling dizzy or light-headed, mention it to your cessation counsellor as they can cause low blood pressure

Good Luck!!

Good luck!

Regarding the nausea, take them with a large glass of water and something to eat especially the morning one (something non-milky is best).

Also make sure you take the full course of 12+ weeks, stopping early can make you more likely to relapse.

Thanks for the advice - have a question; do I eat first and then take them with pint of water or other way around?

It really doesn't matter which way round you do it.

Also don't take your evening dose too close to bedtime, it can give you funny dreams and insomnia!

risingfromtheashes · 23/01/2012 12:23

Thanks again, took my first dose before posting earlier and felt a bit nauseous but don't know if that was because I was expecting to feel nauseous Hmm. Will take your advise tomorrow morning and take tablet with cereal and pint of water Smile. Will let you know how I get on!

DH has quit smoking with these, and he is so pleased, as am I. Good luck!

Checking in on Day 3, took Champix again this morning with cereal and pint of water, not easy downing a pint of water first thing in the morning! Didn't have a great night's sleep despite taking a sleeping tablet Hmm

Day 4 of Champix today, feeling a bit low, have to take second tablet at lunch time, going to take it with soup and a roll, not looking forward to it but no choice if I want to become a non-smoker >

Took second tablet at lunchtime and didn't enjoy it Hmm, am currently back at work and drinking a cup of peppermint tea in the hope that it might make me feel semi-normal again, anyone anyone recommendations for herbal tea that helps with nausea?

I need to go and get some more. I stopped for around 10 weeks with the help of Champix. oNce the crutch of the had gone, I thought I could manage just having one.
I couldn't.

catseverywhere · 27/01/2012 08:51

My partner is on day 10 of the Champix, she had her last cig on Tuesday of this week. Last week she was on the half dose, took a couple of days to stop feeling sicky, but when she went up to the full dose the vomiting started.

We have found that if she has a cup of tea and smallish breakfast before taking the morning dose she can tolerate it and hasn't been sick either this morning or yesterday.

The toughest thing we are finding is the bad dreams - she has always been prone to the odd bad dream every once in a while, but now they are several times every night, and very vivid, although admittedly last night was an improvement on the night before so maybe things are settling down.

Good luck to anyone going through this, it will all be worth it :)

Thanks for posting, really helps to hear other people's stories and tips. Had to fight with myself to take the tablet this morning, hate the feeling I get after taking it!
Not looking forward to taking full dose twice daily next week ....

Why are you taking your second tablet at lunchtime, rising?

You should ideally leave 8-12 hours between tablets, but don't take the evening one too close to bedtime as it can make insomnia and weird dreams worse!

Keep going, hopefully the grottiness will ease and you'll be smoke free soon. Also remember that whilst you are still smoking and taking the Champix you may feel worse, most people feel better once they're not smoking with it.

risingfromtheashes · 27/01/2012 12:00

Sidge, decided to take it at lunchtime as I need to take it with food so take it on my lunch hour from work, do you think I should wait till I am having my evening meal which is normally around 7? Am wary of taking it that late as tend to head to bed early and sleep is disrupted enough at minute . .

OP posts:
Sidge · 27/01/2012 12:20

I'd try and take it later if you can. As long as there's an hour or two between taking it and sleeping you should be OK.

risingfromtheashes · 27/01/2012 12:35

Am still on half tablet so might just continue taking them at lunch time but next Monday when I start taking full strength twice daily, I will leave second table until evening meal time.

Day 8 of Champix, and full strength tablet to be taken twice daily, took tablet this morning and felt a bit woozy for about an hour after it, but back to normal now. Have set Wednesday as my quit date but strangely enough I have no urge at moment to head out for a cigarette. Normally have one at 10am at work but so far so good, longing not really there.

OP posts:
risingfromtheashes · 08/02/2012 12:30

To update, I am today on Day 8 of no smoking, so I can now say that I am 1 full week smoke free, happy days Grin

Keep it up, you're doing really well Smile
