Question about prescription pain medication please

Does being on heavy duty prescription painkillers (think cocodamol, gabapentin and diclofenac) for a number of months make you immune to over the counter pain medication? I.e paracetamol or ibuprofen?

The last few times I have had a headache I've not been able to shift it with the normal stuff...is that because I've messed up my system by being on the stronger ones for so long? Or does it not work like that?

hi - work in chemists - not sure if this is helpful but i have heard people say they have indeed found the weaker stuff wont touch it once they have had the 'good' stuff, however if this is a] imaginary or b] permanent I cannot tell you. Go and speak to your gp or pharmacist perhaps? although i am sure you prob want an answer now they will be the best source of advice. Hope you get it sorted

You don't become immune to paracetamol/ibuprofen, but you can certainly develop some tolerance to codeine in the cocodamol.

Although codeine is often an effective painkiller for headache, it can also trigger headaches. Another possibility is rebound headaches see here

Have you tried other remedies for the headaches? Like the menthol stuff, or cool pad on the head, plenty of fluids, resting in a quiet cool dark room etc.

Thanks Minnie & Freckly

Freckly - I think I will speak to the Dr about it.

Minnie - I have tried rehydrating & menthol, will try cool dark room and see how I get on.

I used to use the strong stuff for a very painful slipped disc, for 10 months! Fortunately, I've healed really well and haven't had reason to use them since September but I hope that doesn't mean my body has now got used to just having the stronger stuff!
