How long is reasonable/usual to be off work with tonsilitis please?

Because I have it and, having never had it before, have no idea when I can go back to work. Does anyone know how long I'm infectious? It hurts quite a bit but I only started antibiotics this afternoon. Any idea? I'm only paid for days I work (I'm a contractor) so am keen ish to get back but would quite like to be at home for the rest of the week now I'm here (I work 120 miles from home). OTOH if I could work from home for Thurs/Fri then that would be my preferred option but I don't know if that would be pushing it if I feel fine by then. TIA.

If you are on antibiotics you will prob feel much better by the morning. I had it over Christmas and am a regular sufferer. Had antibiotics and found my throat felt much better 12 hours after the first dose.

I was off work, about 6 years ago now, for over a week with tonsilitus. It seemed to take ages for the antibiotics to kick in. Didn't start on them until I was feeling relly bad - pretty out of it infact - so maybe that is why it took longer.

24 hours of antibiotics usually sees a turn around I've found. I had it a few months back, first time since I was about 13, and I really did feel rough for a few days.

It depends if it is full blown tonsilitis or strep throat which is imo a very mild form of tonsilitis.

I get it badly every year 3-4 times mainly strep throat in which case after about 24hrs of antibiotics you should be fine to go back but if you have got it full blown then it will knock you off your feet and you will feel shockingly bad for at least a week, I'v ebeen so bad with it before I haven't been able to get off the sofa, and still they refuse to take them out for me

WWW - I had this about a year ago and it completely wiped me out for over a week - again, the first time I have had it. First lot of antibiotics made no difference and I went back to get some different ones.

Hope you feel better soon though

I've had tonsilitis god knows how times and unfortunately it has taken up to 2 weeks to recover. But if it doesn't hurt that much you might only be looking at 4/5 days.

Get well soon!
