Bleeding between periods - can it be caused by illness?

I started with a horrible virus last weekend - fever, aches, dizziness, chesty cough etc - doc said it was very like flu except I've had the flu jab. It knocked me out for the week, am still dealing with the cough now and am certainly not feeling 100%.

Yesterday I noticed I was bleeding when I wiped after going to the toilet, so put a panty liner on. Today the flow is heavier (to the point I may need to use a tampons soon) and I have very, very mild period pain. Now my periods are pretty regular and I finished my last one last Sunday. This blood is very dark and 'old' looking, as opposed to the fresh red blood of my normal period. I've never bled between periods before and am a bit worried as I'm not sure why it's happening. I'm 39 and am definitely not pregnant.

Any ideas?

Probably unlikely give how rubbish you ahve been feeling , but have you had sex recently? Could have irritated a cervical erosion. They are harmless BTW.

No, I'm single so definitely not that.

So difficult to say what would cause that, lots of different conditions cause breakthrough bleeding. I would go to the dr and insist on a scan (I have been sent home being told I had a womb infection with anti-bs no tests done and it wasn't an infection). Definitely go to doctor tomorrow, good luck.

Damn, I really wanted to avoid the docs as I feel like I almost live there atm. Think I'll call then and speak to a doc, see what they say.

Good idea, I know what you mean about living at doctors!!!! Could be absolutely nothing especially if there are other things going on with you.
