amoxicillin and penicillin v

Hi my 15yr old son has been prescribed penicillin v for tonsillitis, ive been to collect it from the pharmacy and they asked has he had it before and he hasnt im worried now about reactions as hes only had amoxicillin before would he of had a reaction to amoxicillin if he was allergic to penicillin as that has penicillin in it, can anyone help x

The reasoning behind asking if he has had them before will be to decide how much info to give you. No point going through it all if he's had them before if you see what I mean.

By reaction I assume you mean allergies? It is unlikely that he would be allergic to penicillin V and not amoxicillin as they are both penicllin based antibiotics. If he had no reaction to amoxicillin, there is no reason for him not to have penicillin V. Pen V is the current first line antibiotic for tonsillitis so he is getting the correct treatment.

Amoxicillin is penicillin - they are checking he hasn't previously had an elergic reaction.

It doesn't mean he will always be not allergic - I developed allergy to penicillin in my 40s.

I am (was?) allergic to penecillin, but can take amoxicillin with no problems. Nobody seems willing to test me on penecillin again though, so I'm not really sure whether I'd react to penecillin again.
