diahorrea as a side effect of antibiotics?

my DS has just started a course of augmnentin duo and after only 2 doses has diahorrea - is this a side effect of the antibiotic or do you think he could have a tummy bug?

My husband often has this reaction to AB's, there should be a leaflet inside the box which lists some known side affects.

jaybird · 16/01/2006 16:02

didn't come with a leaflet as we got it straight from the hospital (DS not a well bunny but better now). he is always totally constipated so not used to these types of nappies!!!!

I always always get the runs with antibiotics and thought it was a standard side affect. Personally, if not "ill" with it and only lasts a short while I wouldn?t worry. Just keep the fluids up and contact GP if any concerning symptoms appear. (Not that diahorrea isn?t a worry - but a little bit for a few days should be ok if no other symptoms IYKWIM)

Oh god yes. I remember DS2 (aged 4 months) filling his nappy up to the armpits after a couple of doses of Amoxycillin.

jaybird · 16/01/2006 16:06

seems ok otherwise - just a bit loopy with cabin fever!! -he was prescribed these once before but don't remember the nappies being this unpleasant - is it possible to sometimes have a reaction and other times not to?? - would hate it to be a tummy upset as he's been ill for ages so could do without another thing to add the the list. also, i'm seriously phobic about puke and the runs!!!!!

Ring your local chemist or GP and they should be able to tell you. I know it is a common side effect of many drugs but nothing about this specific drug.

spacecadet · 16/01/2006 16:30

its a common side effect but do check with your gp or pharmacist if concerned.

My DS have all had the runs spectacularly as a reaction to antibiotics, and that's just with plain old amoxycillin, nothing as heavy-duty as augmentin!

Yes, I think it is a common side effect with that sort of antibiotic.

WigWamBam · 16/01/2006 16:57

Yes, it's a common side effect of antibiotics - you can help by giving him some probiotics (from health food shops) while he's taking the antibiotics.
