Abnormal smear - Galndular cells

Short and sweet, appt tomorrow at/for colposcopy. I'm not too sure what's going on, all a bit of a blur!
I had a smear 28th December, doctors called yesterday, I have an appt booked at/for colposcopy on Thursday, tomorrow.
Eventually my doctor called me and told me that my smear has come back with abnormal glandular cells! That's all I really took notice of.
I cried most of last night, thinking the worst. Today, well I've got through it and have googled more than I should, but I can't help feeling its not going to be good :(
Has anyone else been through this and come through the other side?

Hi there
Ok well its similar to severe dyskaryosis but in a different type of cell. The investigation and treatment is very similar.
The staff at the colposcopy clinic will explain it all to you as well.
Colposcopy is basically like having a smear done but with better lighting and a fancy microscope so the colposcopist can see the cervix really well. They put iodine and a weak vinegar solution on to the cervical skin to check for abnormal areas. They may want to treat if they think it does look abnormal, which they will discuss with you first. A treatment will possibly be a LLETZ.
You do have a local anaesthetic so it doesn't hurt but you might feel a little tugging sensation. I would suggest getting someone to give you lift home as you might feel a bit wobbly afterwards.
If you do have treatment then you usually can't use tampons or have sex for 4-6 weeks afterwards while it heals.
Some useful links:
Colposcopy website
more colposcopy info
Jo's trust forum for women with cervical abnormalities.

Please try not worry, perhaps make a list of questions to ask tomorrow.

Thank you Bela.
I'm not sure if they will do what they need to as AF has arrived, boo!!
DP has said he'll hand hold, bless him. I bet he has no idea what he's letting himself in for!
I'm guessing it will delay TTC?

Hmm, if I remember correctly they don't tend to treat if you're having your period. You can go, find out what they think and get some questions answered. Depending on when your appointment is you could give them a ring and ask if they still want you to come in tomorrow but they will want to you come in soon.
It's a bit tricky to say about delaying TTC, suggest you add that to your list to ask them. Please update as to how you get on, will be thinking of you.

MinkyMoodles · 11/01/2012 23:38

I'll call first thing and see if they want me to go in. I'd hate to waste their time if someone else could be seen!
I'm not getting any younger so I guess TTC may not happen, 37 last week :(
Thanks for answering my worries xx

Thanks for the link.
I saw to doctor at the colposcopy place yesterday, she went through everything but didn't have a look as AF is here :( Anyway, I'm booked in for next Thursday.
The smear has shown possible abnormal glandular cells.
I'm trying to stay away from google so I don't go mad with all the info!

Minky, I had this in December 2010. I was scared shitless!

I had a biopsy done at the same time as the colposcopy and they didn't find any lesions, just a few irregular cells. I also tested positive for HPV Shock!

So I have to go back for 6-monthly smear tests until the HPV is no longer active. But other than that there's no urgent problem - they're just keeping an eye on things.

Try not to worry too much. After worrying myself to death last year, my pathologist friend told me that the type of cells they found had somewhere between 0 and 0.0000001% chance of being cancerous. That put my mind at rest...

MinkyMoodles · 13/01/2012 21:08

Thanks Vitamin
I'm 37, so I'm worrying that being near 40, it might be something nasty!
She mentioned that nearly everyone, male & female have HPV, so I'm not to bothered about that. I'm more bothered that she'll take a sample thing from my womb as the glandular cells also come from there. I'm all confused.
If she can't see anything through the scope, she'll do the womb thing & refer me! It's a bit of a bugger as we're TTC, so that's on hold now :(
Was it painful?

OP posts:
vitaminC · 13/01/2012 21:50

Not painful - just a bit uncomfortable, like a smear test.

I was also 37 at the time (38 now), so I had the same fears.

I already have 3 kids, so no worries about TTC. I hope you're able to stop worrying and get pg quickly. Honestly, I got myself really worked up at the time, but it turned out to be really insignificant.

I had my latest smear a couple of weeks ago and have an appt with the gynaecologist next Thursday for a check-up. She will have the results by then and I'm slightly apprehensive, but after last time she really reassured my, so even if there's something wrong, it should be easily correctible...

Take care and try not to worry about the tests! Hugs to you if you're the huggy type ;o

MinkyMoodles · 13/01/2012 23:40

Aww thanks Vitamin
Let me know how you get on next Thursday, fingers crossed everything is ok.
I've hardly slept and I think DP must be fed up of my long face by now!!
I'm trying to think along the lines, at least I'm in the system and they'll check everything out.

MM xx

Vitamin how did you get on today?

I went to colposcopy, had Letz and a biopsy from my womb Sad it was horrible.
After it was over I had a funny turn, nearly fainted and was white as, sweating! Ewwww, it was a bad morning!

Hoping the results can be fast tracked (doc said she'd try) so two weeks to wait xx
