Green Tea - How many cups a day to optimise the supposed health benefits ?

NomDePlume · 15/01/2006 15:40

I drink green tea with lemon daily. I've brought it in as a replacement to 'normal' tea as the caffeine gives me migraines and I've heard/read about the reputed health benefits of drinking green tea.

I get through around 3 cups a day, is this enough for the anti-oxidant effects to be effective ?

Do you lap up puddle water frequently then, Aimsmum?

lemon does alter the taste, honey also works well. I quite like the taste of it plain though

none. mingin' tasting foods and beverages are bad for your health all around.

PennyLess · 15/01/2006 18:08

I love green tea.
No idea how many you should drink though. I have one or two, but because I enjoy it and know it's better than caffeine.

NomDePlume · 15/01/2006 18:10

I suppose one cup is better than none, and 3 is better than one, so I should just go along with what I'm already doing and shut up !

Thanks Pennyless, nice to see I'm not the only 'weirdo' drinking it

This link says you've hit on a thorny issue on which reseachers can't agree, nom! It compromises on 4-5 cups. I do like green tea but I'm not sure if 5 cups might be overkill!

mazzystar · 15/01/2006 22:52

I love green tea.

Go ahead, brand me as a freak

nightowl · 16/01/2006 04:22

i must be wierd as well then because ive been drinking it since christmas...and ive actually lost some weight too. fancy that.

noddyholder · 16/01/2006 08:25

I think green tea has caffeine doesn't it?

FrannytheQuinoaEater · 16/01/2006 08:34

You could try Redbush tea as well, totally caffeine free and has great health benefits.

The only down side is that some people think "It's too strong and it smells of rats."
(from Alexander McCall Smith)

I think it's lovely.

NomDePlume · 16/01/2006 10:19

noddy, noy according to the box my green tea came in, it says 'naturally caffeine free'

NomDePlume · 16/01/2006 10:20

cathyspam · 16/01/2006 10:23

is jasmine green tea good for you? It says on the box caffeine free and has good antioxidants. I used to work in chinese resaurant and got a taste for it there.

Hulababy · 16/01/2006 10:25

My sister drinks 5-6 cups of green tea a day and swears by it.

I hate the stuff. I have tried it on 3 occassions and each time I have been physically sick following it. Yuk!!! No idea what causes the extreme reaction. great as a weight loss device for me; not sure it is great for my body though!

NomDePlume · 16/01/2006 10:29

blimey, hula, you're probably best off avoiding it then !

cathyspam - I would say jasmine tea prob is beneficial if has high anti-oxidant levels.
