Lung function test (Spriometry with FV-Loop) Asthma. My lungs are 79 years old

I've had asthma since I was about 25 (so for 25 years). It's managed well by means of a very low dosage of beclomethasone (QVAR or Becotide) however I went to an Asthma specialist for a check up and he did the above test.

I am shocked and gutted to hear that my lungs are that of a 79 year old and he really didn't say anything to make me feel any better about it. I'm in disbelief to be honest.

I'm slim, healthy (apart from asthma), do about 5 hours of exercise a week and never really feel out of breath.

Has anyone else had this experience.

Sorry I can't help but I am appalled it was put to you like that!! I would be distraught too! I am also asthmatic ( since childhood - and must be a similar age to you) and am well aware that my lungs are my weakest link! I had spirometry etc and eventually had my inhalors changed to improve lung function. I was not given an age thankfully. I think my over 79 year old Mum could still run faster than me! It does not sound as if you have any breathing difficulties on a day to day basis so I would not get too concerned. Some things are different in asthmatics ( I think we usually are better on some tests like lung volume and worse on others such as expiratory speed although I cannot quite remember the details) Will you be seeing your specialist or Dr? Perhaps he or she can explain why that was said to you.
