All this is making me tempted to buy quinoa.

But must make industrial-sized batch of refried beans, and then own muesli first. Can't have too many unfinished cookery projects cluttering up the kitchen ...

greenbean · 15/01/2006 16:13

I'm an occassional quinoa user. I've tried several recipes from Gillan Mckeith's cookbook. Yummy. Has anyone tried the sea vegatables she recommends?

Beetrootfultoyourself · 15/01/2006 16:14

i do ..why is it freaky??

expatinscotland · 15/01/2006 16:15

I've been munching quinoa for years, since I was introduced to it by a vegetarian back in Denver.

Mmmmmm. Quinoa in the morning for brekkie. It's the way to go.

Littlefish · 15/01/2006 16:16

Tried it, but it felt like eating ground up frog spawn. I think it must be all in the preparation!

Beetrootfultoyourself · 15/01/2006 16:17

how do you cook that expat???

puff · 15/01/2006 16:44

I had some for the first time the other day beety and felt really sick afterwards because.........I didn't wash it beforehand, so there was a yukky soapy tasting residue on it. Had my leg pulled gently re eating quinoa so started this thread.

Will definitely wash it next time!

Meanoldmummy · 15/01/2006 16:47

Good tip Puff - when you're washing it, just angle the saucepan a bit so the quinoa starts to move towards the edge.........and TIP THE HORRIBLE MUCK DOWN THE PLUGHOLE!!!!

puff · 15/01/2006 16:48

Oh crikey, is the yukky stuff really obvious when you wash it then?

OP posts:
Meanoldmummy · 15/01/2006 16:52

no, I meant the quinoa itself.....

Beetrootfultoyourself · 15/01/2006 16:53

This is nice:

Apple Quinoa Breakfast

75g quinoa
200ml orange juice
50g sultanas
10ml honey
1 apple
5ml ground cinnamon

Rinse the quinoa in plenty of cold water and drain well.

Toast the drained quinoa for a few minutes in a non-stick saucepan. Then add the orange juice, sultanas, and cinnamon. Bring to the boil and then simmer gently until the seed germ of the quinoa starts to separate (about 20 minutes). Meanwhile wash and finely chop the apple.

Add the apple to the cooked quinoa and turn out into a bowl.

OOO, THAT SOUND NICE. i SHALLHAVE THAT TOMORROW
