Stool samples and how long can D&V go on for?!

my baby started with diarhhea almost 2 weeks ago, my 2yr old started a couple of days later. dh and 2 of the kids have been vomitting overnight, but only 1 night each. I'm supposed to be taking stool samples from them to the gp tomorrow (well, today really) but am sure it'll just clear up on it's own by the time we hear anything. the kids are all their usual selves (apart from continuous diahhrea).

If it's just a stomach bug, how long can it go on for? the kids have had diahhrea for almost 2 weeks and i've had it for a couple of days, i've had enough of feeling like crap and the non-stop stomach cramps. i'm off to boots to re-stock tomorrow but not sure if anything will help anyway.

is it really worth taking in stool samples (if it's just a stomach bug and we're otherwise in good health), and how am i going to get it from my baby - scrape it out the nappy? not really looking forward to walking into the surgery with 2 little pots of poo (i know they've seen it all before and worse but i've never done this before!)

having a fridge full of christmas leftovers that need eating isn't helping!

2 weeks is a long time and especially in LO's. I would take the samples for peace of mind. Yes remove from nappy with the little scraper thing from the sample pot.

Hope things improve soon :)

Usual recommendation is to do stool samples once diarrhoea has been going on for about 2w, so doing samples for your baby and 2yo would be sensible. You don't need to fill the pot - a good scoop is enough Smile and it fine to scrape it off the nappy - doesn't matter if there is wee in there too.

For the 2yo, put an ice-cream box in the toilet bowl and get him/her to poo into it then scoop some out.
