Help scared by terrible diarrhea (TMI), advice wanted.

For the past couple of days I felt achey and tired, as though I was about to come down with a nasty cold. Then this morning out of the blue I suffered a lot of diarrhea.

I have had 9 bouts since 8am. The thing that is scaring me is that it is just like water (sorry TMI), and each time there seems to be masses- like a couple of pints at least (TMI again, sorry).

I am petrified that I am not going to make the toilet each time.

I took 2 immodium at 9.30pm, but have had two further horrid bouts since. It is scaring me.

I am drinking fluids, although its hard when I am so worried about having an accident.

Weirdly although my tummy is sore and quite cramps, it is not too bad- I have has much worse tummy pain from much less before.

Can anyone give me any advice or comfort?!?!?

I have been fastidious about hygiene, hand washing, towels etc. Unfortunately, we only have one bathroom so I cannot banish myself completely.

Don't take Immodium. What ever is causing the diarrhoea, your body is trying to get rid of it, so you need it out.

Make sure you drink - if you can't get any rehydration solution you can make your own by adding a teaspoon of sugar and a little salt to some juice or water.

It'll settle down soon. Once it's gone get some Actimel which will help replenish your healthy gut flora.

Hope you feel better soon Smile

Lots of fluids, rest, let it take it's cause don't worry. .Personally wouldn't take imodium took it once stopped diarrhea but then didn't go to loo for days which was worse than diarrhea. Really bad diarrhea is like water.

Owlelf · 28/12/2011 23:39

Have already taken immodium Blush, won't take any more though.

Thank you so much for the advice. I can't understand how my body is producing this Sad. Downing water to replace fluids but it's just going straight through me, yuck!

I found sucking ice cubes helped when couldn't keep fluids down, try to sleep as much as possible I am a great believer in the body needing to sleep when ill.

I had this. I took a sample to the docs (it looked like wee) blush. By the time the results were back it had cleared up. The doc though food poisoning. No treatment, it just ran it's course. Literally. Sad

Hope you feel better soon.

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 28/12/2011 23:45

This is exactly what I had.

It started Boxing Day morning, went all day and a bit through the night.

I haven't been great today either. I ate 2 dry biscuits yesterday and a slice of dry toast today. Still been running to the toilet.

I have only been sipping water.

Sparklingbrook · 28/12/2011 23:45

Blush even.

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 28/12/2011 23:49

Sorry - had to dash Blush

I have had a few sudden and piercing headaches too. None of them lasted long and I didn't take anything for them (was not putting paracetamol into my empty stomach).

I felt I should be 2 sizes smaller this morning, but sadly wasn't Xmas Grin

Owlelf · 29/12/2011 00:05

Sounds like it may be doing 'the rounds'.

Sorry to hear you have got headaches too chipping, hope they clear up soon.

I cannot sleep for fear of an accident Blush.

I had this last winter and was diagnosed as norovirus. When that finished I had about an hour before I came down with a raging temp and the flu Grin

brighthair · 29/12/2011 00:16

Oops pressed send too quick
I must have been to the loo at least 60 times in a day, was water at both ends, no warning and I threw up all over he carpet, then didn't make it to the toilet. So attractive!!
Sip fluids try not to glug even if you're thirsty as that's what made me throw up. You might get back/abdo pains too so take some painkillers but NO immodium
Hopefully shouldn't last any longer than 48hrs but you might feel a bit crap for a few more days

DioneTheDiabolist · 29/12/2011 00:18

Do what you can to keep your fluid intake up. If someone can get you some ginger cordial, that will help, as will a banana, if you can keep it down.

Fairytightsonmychristmastree · 29/12/2011 00:35

Diarrhea likr this is awful. Sometimes my IBS gets so extreme I end up just passing water and the volume can seem shocking. You'll be pleased to know I have survivied although when its that bad I do feel bloody rotten.

Rest plenty but also drink as much as possible. Regular sips rather than gulping down a glass.

If your bum starts to get sore try using moist toilet tissue or non allergenic baby wipes.

Hopefully its a 24 hour bug so you are now nearing the end of the worst of it.

Hoep you feel better soon.

I had this a couple of months ago and still none the wiser as to what it was but OH and I came down with it within a couple of hours of each other. I ended up in bed for 4 days, sorry but my OH only had it for 2. Doctor recommended dioralyte (not very nice) and to sip as much water as I could. I had hideous backache with it so took paracetemol (not ibuprofen as it can upset your stomach even more) and just prayed for it to finish. Agree with you that the stomach cramps were not painful at all though, very odd!

ameliagrey · 30/12/2011 14:37

I had this much earlier in the year. 5 days of passing "water" instead of poo.

My mum reminded me of an old "trick" suggested byher late GP. It worked.

grate an apple and leave it to stand. The juices should run. Then eat it all.

You would think that the fibre would make you worse, but it doesn't- somehow the pectin in the juice settles the bowels.

Bunbaker · 31/12/2011 09:39

It sounds like a bug or food poisoning. You are lucky if you have never experienced diarrhoea like this before. I have and it isn't nice.

amelia I have heard of this remedy as well. It is part of the BRAT diet which is recommended when you are recovering from a tummy bug - bananas, rice, apples and toast.
