How long for Amoxysillin to work?

DH has been unwell since about Friday (now Tuesday). He's eaten almost nothing and drunk very very little since then ( 2 cups of tea per day!). Main symptom is earache. Went to local out of hours hospital yesterday and has been on Amoxycillin (antibiotics) since yesterday am. Also taking painkillers, currently a paracetemol/codeine combo recommended by pharmacist (because by 5pm yesterday he had maxed out on paracetemol & ibuprofen). He's still got terrible pain, is having to ration the painkillers.

I'm thinking he won't start to feel better until he's been taking them (antibiotics) for 48 hours min - am I right?

Yes, 48 hours assuming 500 mg 3 x a day. if lower dose may take longer, say 72. Be very very very careful not to overdose on the paracetamol especially if using combination medications.

If he is still in so much pain after 48 hours on the antibiotics he needs to be reviewed by a doctor. If necessary GPs can refer patients directly to a ear nose and throat specialist for these types of things

When I had amoxycillin for a chest infection a few years ago they didn't kick in for 4.5 days, (I did go back to GP after about 3 days as still in a lot of pain). Agree with the other posters about going back to GP given the amount of pain he is in.
