Low peak flow

I have been rubbish at taking my asthma inhalers lately. It only ever manifests itself as a cough and I've never (touch wood) had an attack. Anyway cough is coming I think so am determined to do my inhalers every day as I'm meant to but also measured my peak flow and it's 300 when for my height it should be 500. Should I be worried - don't think I can get doc appt until new year now. Presumably my brown inhaler will have had a cumulative effect by then so it should be better?

I should add my gp is great but their asthma nurse is rubbish. I could do with a general asthma check though but found their nurse a waste of space.

Hi yellow.

Do you know what your normal peak flow is rather than reccomended? Id phone tomorrow and try to get emergency one - might need steroids or something. Or at least dr can listen to chest and reassure.

Honestly go now rather than wait until end up in hosp. This time last year I had mild asthma now its brittle. Hosp is shite esp this time of year so go tomorrow to make sure prevent it

My recommended is 500 but I never get over 450 and 300 ish is chest infection indicator, my go just goes on this now doesn't listen anymore.

Our asthma nurse is awful and told me it was my own fault my asthma was bad from when I smoked years ago! Doctor was much nicer and reviewed and upped my mess. Give doctor a ring don't suffer over Xmas.

Thanks all. I had to take baby to doc and was so flustered because she hates doctors and screamed at sight of stethoscope I didn't get round to mentioning it Angry

But my mum said when this happens to her she is told to double her dose of the brown one for a few days to kick start recovery so I'm doing this (2 puffs twice a day) and back to 370 now so on the up.

It gets worse with red wine so it may have been the mulled wine I had at a party on Monday that set it off.

you are also supposed to keep the double dose going for a good while....3-4 weeks I think!

i can't recall properly as dd is due her review soonish, but she only ever gets the asthma symptoms with a cold. She is 16 and manages it all herself mostly....with a bit of minor nagging a reminder.

yellowflowers · 24/12/2011 13:48

Thanks catsmamma. I will double dose until I get a doc appt post Chistmas and then get a proper review.
