Why is my wee purple?

Gave me a shock I can tell you, but not sure how worried I should be.

It's purple rather than red blood coloured IYSWIM and quite dark. I know it happens if you eat a lot of beetroot, but I can't remember the last time I did that.

Yesterday I ate shreddies with milk, a ham sandwich, banana and a Turkey dinner followed by Christmas pud. Today I've had boiled eggs with toast, a fresh fruit smoothie made with banana and a handful of frozen berries and a cold spread of bread, pate, smoked mackerel and cheese, followed by apple pie and ice cream.

Last night I had 2 glasses of red wine and 2 white wine, plus a coffee and today I've had a Lucozade sport drink. Other than that I've only had water to drink (and I drink a lot of that so wee usually very light).

I did a 10 mile run this afternoon, so feel tired, but not ill at all. It only started around 5pm today.

So, what can it be?

Could it be the berries?

I have had beetroot wee once before and I don't think it was the quantity of beetroot I ate so much as that I didn't have a huge amount of other things either. Your diet today does look a little on the light side (to me Blush) unless the quantities were huge.

this may help

baubleybobbityhat · 10/12/2011 22:01

Blimey! Thanks for all the minute detail.

Maybe wait til tomorrow and see if its still purple?

Selks · 10/12/2011 22:07

Gossip's linked article mentions tryptophan being broken down and leading to purple urine. Turkey is high in tryptophan. I'm no scientist or medic, but that came to mind when I read the article. If it carries on get it checked out!

RandomMess · 10/12/2011 22:09

did you have cranberries with your turkey too?

letmehelp · 10/12/2011 22:13

Blimey, it's not that purple Gossip, but that's interesting Selks.

Sorry baubley, but I could only think it must be something I ate, so kind of thought the detail relevant?

Yes, I thought there wasn't much there too goats, but I was out Thursday night, so didn't see much of Friday, until I had to go out again and I didn't get up very early today either. This time of year is all very well...I'll make up for it tomorrow! I suppose the berries are a possibility, but it really was only a few and I make the same smoothies quite often.

Didin't King George have purple/blue urine, it is a symptom or a rare condition but not sure of the details though, King George was mad though don't you know??

McQueasy · 11/12/2011 19:17

acute porphyria
causes urine to turn purple when it's left in uv light. If you had that, you would be pretty unwell. More likely to be something u ate.
It could be myoglobulin caused by muscle breakdown from the run. Drink plenty and see ur dr if it continues

JackMatthias · 12/12/2011 12:55

I'm thinking porphyria too.

CointreauVersial · 12/12/2011 13:00

My mate took himself off to A&E after eating beetroot - he thought he had some horrendous internal injury when he saw what he was weeing.

The triage nurse just went "eaten any beetroot recently...?" Grin

Reenypip · 12/12/2011 14:07

Red wine? Berries?

I have a condition called variegate porphyria which can cause my wee to go a dark red/brown/purple colour.

Reenypip · 12/12/2011 14:09

I had urine, stool, blood and genetic testing to confirm I have it. As my mum has it. VP is genetic.

Reenypip · 12/12/2011 14:17

Not related specifically to your question, but before I had green poo which was probably from drinking green apple sours the previous day.
