Severe tonsillitis

I am really suffering. Day four now. Have not got up properly in that time, If I do, I feel like im incredibly drunk. I just want to lie down. Have not seen my babies since Sunday, cannot breastfeed dd, can barely find the energy to get up for a wee. Iv had severe vomiting (every 40 minutes all Tuesday night). It is still excruciating to swallow although this has probably been further exaggerated by vomiting. The build up of Pressure in my ears feels like my Head will explode. Iv seen doctor on Tuesday who prescribed antibiotics but also not take them unless I think I need them as infection is probably viral. I started taking them yesterday, I couldn't get much worse. I'm taking as much pain relief as I can but they don't even take the edge off. Iv lost 6lb since Sunday.

Iv never had tonsillitis before, Iv never been this ill before. Is this normal? When can I expect to start to feel better? Sorry feeling very sorry for myself, I miss my babies. Am on phone sorry for typos

Yes, severe tonsillitis is exactly like this. So glad you are taking the antibiotics - you should start to feel a bit better by tonight. I know exactly how wretched you feel, and how painful it is, and I really do sympathise. I hope you have a much better night tonight. Have you tried sucking lumps of ice? Can give you a tiny bit of relief in the short term. Also are you gargling with the pain relief and that helps - soluble aspirin or soluble paracetamol and codeine - both available at chemists.

Yorkstar · 08/12/2011 10:43

I am unfortunately allergic to codeine. Thanks for the ice cube tip will try that. Need to eat but nobody here and just don't have the energy to get up and walk into the next room. I smell of sick and sweat :( but don't care enough to try and shower. Everything hurts. My dh and I have a planned night out tomorrow (our first since dd was born 7 months ago) a Christmas ball. Iv spent weeks planning/preparing for it. Our first night without dc all night. I'm bot going to be able to go am I?

Sorry, Yorkstar, but I really doubt it. Sad

Gargling soluble aspirin for the pain then - and gargling warm salty water can help with the infection, but it's gross.

Last time I had it (August) my epiglottis was also hugely swollen along with my tonsils, it was hideous.

Hope you start to fell better soon - you should now you've taken the antibs for one and a half days. My GP told me to take twice the amount the first day, which helped kickstart them.

Yorkstar · 08/12/2011 11:24

I'm gutted :(
Thanks for your help. It sounds like you have suffered your fair share too. Never realised how bad it can be.

Have it twice a year-ish, but still always forget how painful it is!

So sorry about your disappointment. Maybe you could arrange a night in a hotel after Christmas to make up for it?

zanz1bar · 08/12/2011 14:22

second the warm salty water gargle, sounds so simple but belive me it really does work when the pain killers arent touching it.

Hi,

try gargling with salt water it does help a lot. Used to get it all the time and eventually they took them out. If you can manage it try soggy toast, it is the best thing as when you swallow it it takes the pus off the tonsils so helps them heal. Try to avoild things like strepsils as well as they tend to dry the throat and the bactria multiply. hope you feel better soon

Feenie · 09/12/2011 07:03

How are you feeling today, Yorkstar?

SantasHat · 09/12/2011 17:12

Yorkstar How is it today? Sorry about your throat. Awful pain. Suck ice cubes. Don't try to do anything, just lie still.

Yorkstar · 09/12/2011 22:29

Thank you for thinking of me. Today is a slight improvement, the antibiotics must have started their magic but I still feel dreadful. My throat is still sore although not as excruciating as before but I have headaches and mouth ulcers and bruises on my body (which I can only gather from lying down too much). My ears are still painful and I can't quite hear properly, I feel like I need to pop them. The last thing is my face on one side is very tender to touch.

I didn't make my night out Feenie. What a week to spend my past week on maternity like!

Thank you for the salt water tips, I tried it and although disgusting did provide some temporary relief.

Tonsilitis is hell on earth.

Just finished my 4th bout in last 8 weeks. 4 lots of antibiotics. Bleurgh.

Feenie · 09/12/2011 22:38

So glad you are feeling a little bit better, Yorkstar - it can only get better now!

Hope you can arrange a proper treat when you are fully recovered x
