Anyone knowledgable about this stuff?
Basically my DN has an ovarian cyst (a chocolate cyst) secondary to endometriosis. A few weeks ago she had a massive flare up of this and was admitted to hospital for a few days for rest and assessement.
Today she has gone into hospital to have the cyst removed and surgery has been delayed as her CA125 result came back massively high.
CA125 is a marker for Ovarian cancer but non-malignant conditions DO cause a rise in it as well such as....endometriosis!
However, the consultant has said that the result is over 500 when with endometriosis it's usually between 100-150 (normal level less than 30).
So DN has to have an MRI scan later today which I am assuming is to see what type of surgery is best.
The other thing is that this blood test was done just 48 hrs after she was discharged from hospital following her flare up.
Anyone know how likely it is for this result to be secondary to the flare up?
DN is only 22 so I know that statistically she is unlikely to have Ovarian cancer but I can't help worrying. Have had a long chat with her on the phone thhis morning - she is anxious and just wants to have the scan out of the way.
I have said to her that the fact her blood was done so soon after the flare up might explain the result but that obviously the consultant has to check it out.
Anyone knowledgable about this sort of thing?
