niece (12) just diagnosed with diabetes. In hospital they are teaching her how to use insulin. she went to A&E after her throat was burning - she drank orange cordial- what could cause this? Blood test confirmed. im in york she is as well - at the same hospital my DD just home from!! Has anyone been/ is in this position? thank you - its just so odd as it is type 1 it could have been found years ago

it would have just come on. sadly, for many people, its first presentation is like this, as an emergency case. :(

type 1 can be managed quite well, just make sure that everyone in your family AND all her friends learn about how to manage it, and what to do if she does get into another emergency situation.
lots of positive vibes for your dn and your family

Hi my DD is type 1 diabetic she was diagnosed at age 4 & is now 11. Your DN will probably cope a lot better with it than all the adults (with the worry) with the odd temper tantrum(stupid diabetes, I want chocolate, I dont want to be different!!) like my DD!! In my case it was really worrying, too much information in such a short space of time to process. So I do feel for all of you at the moment. My DD now has an insulin pen to inject herself with, which she loves as it gives her a lot more freedom to be out & about with her friends!! She copes really well with it on the whole!! She has sleepovers at friends houses, she does have a mobile phone so we are always there for her if she needs us & shes always there for us if we feel we need to remind her about her jabs!!! LOL
Every thing will be fine, once all of you have processed all the info they are chucking at you at the mo!!
