Partial nephrectomy - any experiences?

DH has a tumour on his kidney which is probably benign but still likely to have a partial nephrectomy.

Has anyone had one, or had someone close go through it? It will be done as an urgent case so fairly soon, and I'm wondering what the next month or so might be like.

My parents neighbour has just undergone a full nephrectomy. What is it you wnated to know and I will see if I can help.

I was wondering about pain, recovery and ability to deal with toddler - but it won't be a full nephrectomy so perhaps not the same recovery. Thanks for your reply.

He was in hospital for 5 days after the op I think and then told he shouldn't drive for 6 weeks.

However, as the only driver in his family he was driving after about a week Shock He seems to be feeling really well but I don't know if he is on any pain medication.

He has been back into hospital since because he had a bladder infection.

Hope everything goes well for your DH.

Depends on whether laparoscopic or open partial nephrectomy. Why is the benign tumour being removed?

Hi Alana, I had a whole nephrectomy by open surgery a couple of years ago. I was in hospital for exactly a week and this length of stay was probably more because of other complications I have (I'm a transplant patient). I had to take it easy at first and was back to work within 12 weeks. It took me a while to get my strength back and I needed an iron infusion too so that could have lengthened my recovery. I was told that if I had had a laparoscopic nephrectomy I could have gone back to work within 6 weeks and that was for a whole nephrectomy so hopefully after a month or so your husband will be feeling ok. It was quite painful for a couple of weeks but not bad enough to need tramadol once I was home, paracetomol was fine. I hope it all goes well :)

Thanks for your replies. Apparently the protocol is to remove benign rumours of this type as they cannot rule out carcinoma, and don't biopsy as that could spread the cells locally should it be malignant.

It looks small enough to BR done laparascopically so hopefully recovery won't be too bad.

Thanks again.

Laparoscopic should be out in 3 days all going well. Much kinder than open procedure.

That's good to know, thanks wobbly
