Adverse Affects to Aspirin

This most probably isn't serious or anything to worry about. I've taken aspirin very occasionally in the past and then had an upset stomach. I never knew if it was coincidental or because of the aspirin so not really thought much of it.

However last night I took 2 aspirin tablets before bed. I was up nearly all night with bad stomach ache which has not yet gone. Along with this has been diarrhoea, although not bad.

Obviously I will avoid aspirin altogether now I know it's causing this. But is it something I need to go to the doctor about or do I just wait for pain to go and leave it at that?

Asprin gives me horrific stomach ache and diarrhoea, every time I take it it seems to get worse.

It took me a while to make the connection and only the other day I took some as I had a migraine and no other painkillers, it got rid of the migraine but a few hours later I was doubled over.

Personally, once the pain is gone I tend to forget all about it, but if you are concerned then you should see your gp.

Aspirin is part of a group of drugs called NSAIDs (non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs) - a common side effect of their use is irritation of the stomach lining and this is particularly a problem with long time use (stomach ulcers & bleeding) although some people are more sensitive than others and it can cause stomach pain or upset stomach even in small doses.
Paraceatomol is a different drug and doesn't work in the same way but may be a better alternative for pain-relief if you aren't getting on with aspirin it is also considered a safer drug for general use with less side effects.

Thank you for your replies. I didn't think it was serious and just a side effect so that reassured me.

Paracetamol is my usual painkiller (although I rarely need anything). Perhaps stupidly, I only take the aspirin occasionally thinking I'm thinning out my blood. My brother died early of numerous blood clots aged 28 in Jan this year and I've been overly panicky about them since. However, if they're causing unpleasant side effects such as this, it's probably best not to take at all.
