15 year old son with lump in groin

Trying hard not to panic here. 15 year old son has just come downstairs looking as white as a sheet saying he's found a lump 'down there'. He was wearing pj bottoms and tried to get me to feel through them but I insisted he showed me properly. He managed to hold his 'tackle' and let me see it. Difficult to describe the location, but it's sort of on the join between his groin and thigh. It's about the size of a large pea. I could feel it through the thin material but wanted to see if there was any bruising which might suggest it was caused by an external blow (he plays a lot of rugby). But no bruising, so obviously something going on inside.

OK. I will of course take him to the doctor. I want to be at the door with him when they open tomorrow morning and have him seen as an emergency, but I don't want to panic him so I'll have to wait for an appointment and will be lucky if we get one this week. I lost my dad to cancer last month so I'm probably not taking a very balanced view here.

Does anybody have any idea what this might be?

Too low for a hernia?

I had similar, but as well as the pea sized lump, my thigh was also a little swollen and red and sore to touch. The gp said it was an abcess and I had antibiotics and it cleared up.

Hope you can find out more tomorrow.

Yes, it's sort of on the join with his groin and thigh. So, if he was wearing y fronts, it would be on one side of the 'y' say half way between his hip bone and penis. I think, having just googled some more, it sounds like a swollen inguinal (?) lymph node which can be swollen for something trivial like him fighting an infection from a cut (he has loads of scrapes from his rugby) or something more sinister.

I was just about to post that I once had some pea sized lumps in the join between thigh and groin and it was swollen glands. Better to get it checked of course but that could be all it is. Good luck getting an appointment.
