UTI in pregnancy nightmare

i am now 17 weeks pregnant. due to a kidney abnormality i am very prone to UTIs. i had many as a child that were neglected and my right kidney is badly scarred. i had a UTI in early november which was treated with anti-biotics. i had bad pain in my side and back then. since the 21th of december i have now had horrible pain again and was treated with anti-biotics and a urine sample confirmed i had an infection. christmas and new year were pretty wrecked because i was in such agony. now i am on my second course of anti-biotics (stronger and different ones) as the first lot didn't get rid of the pain at all and it is now just getting a lot worse. i have two days left to take on this course and then have to hand in a sample again to get it tested. the pain is so bad, especially when i walk around. i don't know what to do. should i go back to the doctor today or wait and see and bear the pain for now?

Sorry to hear this. I too had many UTIs in childhood because of a kidney problem, but was lucky and suffered no long-term effects. I remember the agony though.

IMO, as you are pregnant you should go to the doctor if you are in such distress. A pregnant woman shouldn't be left in pain. Is there any possibility that you have a kidney stone? I don't remember pain in my back or side during a UTI.

i had UTIs throughout pregnancy - total nightmare. In an emergency, i would got to the a and e for antibiotics, and try and keep some back for emergencies. my docs was useless because they kept on sending off samples that would take 3 days to analyse, leaving me in agony in the meanwhile. there are some herbal remedies, but i don't know which work. health visitors normally do however.

thankfully my GP just gives me anti-biotics when i mention i have any UTI symptoms. i was told by the consultant in the hospital that they considered giving me anti-biotics to keep at home and to take as required, but they didn't go through with that idea. i am now being monitored by having a urine sample tested every month during pregnancy.

i did think of kidney stones, but i just have pain on my side/back, not lower down. and no blood in urine either.

When you have UTIs and are not pg, do you get the same pain? It's possible that the pain is nothing to do with the UTI.

when not pregnant i do get the pain sometimes with UTIs. i did once years ago turn out to be muscles rather than kidney pain. the pain is also only on one side (right, where the abnormality and scarring is).

hi lilacbump i had exactly the same problems as you reaccuring UTI`s when younger which was led to kidney shrinking and scaring which gave me high blood pressure then when i became pregnant at 21 the problems really began i would like you get bouts of pain which would make me cry they were so painful each time i was told to go to hospital to get checked out and was given anti-biotics each time i was already under consultant at hospital for the blood pressure and extra scans this carried on until i was about 6monthspregnant then they had to keep me in to give me anti-b through a drip then the last 2months were nearly all spent at hospital due to infection/high blood pressure.
sorry to ramble on just thought i would share my experience with you

You know what your insides feel like, IYSWIM, and whether a pain is 'right' or not, but I think you should see your GP sooner than the end of the course. If the abs were working I think you would not expect still to be in pain from the UTI at this stage of the course. If it's really bad, or getting worse, then go to A&E. Have you been booked into a hospital yet? During pregnancy you can - and should - use the labour ward as A&E. I did this when I had unexplained pain.

mummy2jake, thank you for sharing your experience. i'm sorry to hear you were so ill to have be admitted into hospital. though, it is actually good to know i am not the only one who has gone through this. i had no trouble with UTIs when pregnant with DD.
i will definitely go to a&e or the emergency doctor if it gets worse.
