To my great shame I have 'exercise on prescription' I've had 2 sessions so far.

Thinking of going to look at one of the local Gyms later today - just trying to work out if I will be able to go often enough to justify the cost. Really need to do something!

The gym where i have signed up is quite reasonable, its 99.00 for the yearl and is open 7 days a week. Its got quite a big sauna, hairdressers, beauticians etc and is ladies only.

I'm planning on cutting out chocolate (guffaw!) and get back to swimming in the mornings - not been since ds1 started school in Sept.

Well its the virgin gym i have joined the fact it is mega expenisive will motivate me to go.This will be my 3rd visit in 5 days today on saturday we took the kids to the pool there after a while i went into the spa for a bit while dh watched the kids it was pure heaven. My induction is at 2pm today i am really nervous.

I'd love to join a gym. But, it must be convenient for my routine, or I won't go.

The only gyms (that I'm aware of) near me look not very clean (used by every area school so busloads of kids of all ages arrive daily), or are very high end (filled with glam wives of city workers on mega salaries). There doesn't seem to be much in between for us "normal" people.

Also, when I looked at the class schedule (at the not very clean gym), everything seemed geared for office workers as all classes seemed to be either very early in the morning (before work), or early evening (after work). There was barely anything offered during the day when dd is at school - which is when I'd need/want to go.

Legitimate negatives, or am I just making excuses?

Well I joined up this afternoon Gone for off peak membership which has saved me a few pounds, and got a great first month deal and free membership fee. Can take DD swimming for £5 a time or may just make her a junior member if I take her regularly - going to look at swimming lessons for her. It is really close to DD's nursery so really handy, menaing I am more likely to use it. Have to go 2-3 times a week to justify cost

My induction is on Friday, but going to go to the pool on Wednesday as I have the day off work and DD is at nursery.

Really i had a bay i wouldnt take them in car seat all creche workers have to be qualified or working towards.I know the virgin gym has different ages and times so appropriate levels are mixing together.Why not ask for a day trial and leave your babe in the creche to see although i am sure it will be fine.

Had my induction by the way and it was great the instructors are all very friendly and give you lots of ideas.The main gist of today is -my arms are stronger than i thought,my legs weaker and my stomach wobblier!

006 I would imagine there would be H & S issues with taking a baby into a gym. In our club no children under 16 are allowed in. Give the creche a try, I used one for 5 years before my dd started f/t school.
joanna4, don't be scared of your gym induction, its there to show you how to use the equipment properly, you won't have to "perform", they'll be really nice to you.

I joined a lovely little gym last year but need a push to go again so it's one of my new years resolutions. I'm going to start with swimming though and need to get a new swimsuit tomorrow then I'll be all set to go. I might venture into the gym and go on the bikes or rowing machine.

The thing that puts me off is the horrible sick feeling when you reach a certain point in exercise - I am really unfit!

I've put off getting a programme for the gym because of this - I would rather go in with DH and use the machines slowly at my own pace, I doubt if this is really helping me though so maybe I will bite the bullet and do it properly!

Jo - exercise on prescription is an nhs thing - for people with serious health problems (heart, obesity, etc etc) any conditions that are really helped by controlled and supervised exercise. Your gp gives you a 'prescription' and you get free gym and'or swimming sessions with a personal trainer. Free membership, plus 3 x weekly for 10 weeks free, then 3 x weekly for 10 weeks half price, then you pay normal session fees. You are monitored (bp etc) and a personal plan designed for you and the personal trainer helps to motivate you.

My gym doesn't re-open until next week. I'll be going back to my hour a day sessions (20 mins running on the treadmill, 20 on the bike, 10 on the rower, 10 on the x trainer and a few reps on the weights). Fingers crossed I can keep it up ! It's hard to go back after a break
