I am a very recent convert, and as such have turned into a gym bore .

I hate sport with a passion but find I love the techy machines and like the feedback. I can see that my cardio is improving even if it doesn't feel like it. I also seem to be quite strong - either that or the other women don't push themselves very much on the weights as I seem to lift quite a lot more than most of them.

Cam · 11/02/2006 09:22

Don't worry coolturkey, you can't bore us on this thread, that's what its for.

Passionflower · 12/02/2006 19:12

Right progress report,

Went to the gym this afternoon. Rowing was fine, running only managed 5 mins, 1 min walking, 5 mins. Felt like I was going to puke and legs like jelly. Went off and did my weights and abs, almost left it at that but thought to myself 'no, b*gger that, was running 20 mins'. So I went back on the treadmill and managed 12mins and a fair bit faster than I had been. Left the gym loads happier.

CoolTurkey · 12/02/2006 20:14

I do 12 mins runnning at 9Km/hr but it is getting a bit easier so I could probably do more. I tend to stick to my program but might increase the speed ina few days.

I like the weights. So, how much do you all lift on the various machines?

Passionflower · 12/02/2006 20:38

Know what I'm doing but not the names of all the machines IYKWIM. Am going again tomorrow so I'll bring my program booklet and I'll let you know tomorrow. Am doing 10km/hour (have longish legs though .

bunny3 · 12/02/2006 20:42

I've just joined one a gym and have attended twice so far. I am pretty crap though, cant run at all and tend to stay on the bike as at least it is sitting. Am doing lots of weights and leg /arm work too as summer is coming and I want to live in shorts and vests.

Lauraa83 · 12/02/2006 21:24

Hello can I join in too?

I do Body Pump and Body Attack classes at the gym and I love doing it so much!
For years I was doing videos at home and you get to hate them don't you and never get round to it! I started going last May and just went in the actual gym at first but I think classes get you to do so much more.

I read that Body Pump has been voted the fastest way to change your shape and I'll agree with that I noticed a difference after doing it once!

CoolTurkey · 13/02/2006 17:19

Did pilates today instead. How can exercise that is mostly lying down be so effective? I felt too worn out now to go to the gym.

Cam · 13/02/2006 17:28

I went swimming today which is all I've got time for at the moment, I'm looking forward to getting back into classes though in the near future. Still feel I need to build up a little more stamina though.

chapsmum · 13/02/2006 17:36

WOW! the thread I've been looking for, can I join, I did loads in the gym pre preg for adventure racing, now just getting back into the sweing of things...do any of you do spin fit?

Passionflower · 13/02/2006 17:40

Tried spinning, hurts my bum too much!

Passionflower · 13/02/2006 17:40

Tried spinning, hurts my bum too much!

Passionflower · 13/02/2006 17:41

oops.

CoolTurkey · 13/02/2006 17:45

Lots of new vocabulary for a novice such as myself - what are spinning, body pump and body attack?

Cam · 13/02/2006 17:53

Bicycling, lifting weights and kick boxing

moondog · 13/02/2006 18:04

How much do you lift CoolTurkey??

I can do 4kg comfortably on most of the arm stuff (5 on one) and 6 on the leg stuff.

Do any of you lot get callouses from rowing?
Myhands don't look great, but would gloves be ridiculous unless one attempting 20k forays in the open seas??

moondog · 13/02/2006 18:05

Cycling seems the most insanely boring thing of all.
Tried it last week.Nearly fell asleep.

Cam · 13/02/2006 18:07

spinning is very fast though with an instructor shouting at you, and you have to be very fit to do it (which is why I don't)

moondog · 13/02/2006 18:09

What do they shout then?
Is it a virtual ride (ie pretending you're going up a hill.I would be sniggering uncontrollably.)

LadyTophamHatt · 13/02/2006 18:12

oh oh oh oh oh oh can I join?
I had my first proper session in the gym today and was thinking "I must find the gym thread on MN" while I was pounding on the treadmill.

We cancelled our membership when the house when on the market last summer so all my hard work and toned body (well most of it, my backside still crept down the back of my legs) was lost.

I really didn't want to go but when I got there and started the feeling returned and I loved it.

Can't wait to go again now...although tomorrow I am going to reallllly ache!

Today I did-
Bike
Treadmill
Rowing machine
then an assortment of weight machines and light free weights.
Sit up on the gym ball.

MABS · 13/02/2006 18:14

I love Spin coz there's no coordination!! Where do you go LadyTopham as you're down my way aren't you? (PS have you see the Brighton thread in meetups?)

Cam · 13/02/2006 18:14

moondog, they shout things like "faster faster"

CoolTurkey · 13/02/2006 18:15

I had a blister on my bum from rowing. It was sore.

I don't like the exercise bike much - can't seem to get my legs used to it, they always to ache as soon as I start.

On the various weights machines I do 20Kg on the chest press, 32.5 Kg on the leg extension thingy, 37.5Kg on the leg curl and 37.5Kg on the pull-down machine.

MrsSpoon · 13/02/2006 18:15

I have always avoided this thread because I thought it was only for 'proper' gym users. I mostly do classes but have had my second induction to the gym today. Think I've managed to twang my back on the abdominal machine thingy, still trying to get the hang of it .

moondog · 13/02/2006 18:17

CT eh??????
Maybe I do 40 not 4???
Or are you incredibly strong??
It sounds a hell of a lot!

Cam,are bikes all primed to work in same gear then, sometimes low, sometimes high?
